My Transformer has a micro-SD card reader built in. The new Sony S1 tablet has a full size SD card reader.

This was one of the reasons we got a tablet, when travelling we copy our photos on to the tablet for extra security.

EDIT Saw your post about CF cards - the Sony tablet has micro USB. I imagine you could attach a card reader to that.

I still think at the minute, tablets are little more than an expensive toy (the Kindle exempted as it is designed for a very specific function).

I fully expect, however, that in 5 years time, they'll be able to do everything a laptop can do. And that is when I will get one, but not a moment sooner.

What are you talking about? You can get a Samsung Series 7 slate running Windows 7 today.

In 6-9 months you will see a whole lot of slate PCs running Windows 8. Pair the tablet with a keyboard and functionally what's the difference compared to a laptop?

It may well work fine for some including yourself. I remain sceptical. I don't even like using my laptop touchpad for too long, would much rather plug in a USB mouse.

When trying to think up use cases for an iPad, i.e. when is it more suitable than a laptop or a smartphone, I find it pretty niche. It seems to me to still be a case of when you want to view things, still not a great device for doing things.

*Tablets in general not jus ipad

About time they started to do that.

Micro SD slots whilst better than 'nothing sellers' to me are a lazy design.

Yes and much better than tablets with a proprietary connection that requires the user to buy adapters.

I think a good summary is that a laptop offers great portability between different locations, and an iPad offers great portability within a location (eg a home).

I haven't got one, but I can imagine it being a great thing to have around the house. more convenient than a laptop to quickly look at stuff, and a bigger screen than a smartphone.

a couple of friends of my wife have one, and they both love them. she's used to me gibbering on, but it's quite funny when people she wouldn't expect to gibber on, gibber on.

I could be tempted when the next one comes out though, especially as adobe ate about to release stuff like this that I can actually justify as a bona fide work related app:

Adobe Proto

that's probably fair comment. there's no doubt it does some things better than a laptop or a smartphone, it's just a question of whether those things justify the cost.

as far as I can tell the answer is that the head probably says no, and the heart yes.

but things like looking at photos is great on an iPad, and some of the iPad versions of magazines / papers are more intuitive and immersive than simply reading a web page.

as for going things - a big part of that is up to developers. the adobe app I linked to above looks like a great tool for quickly designing mock ups for web designs for example.

How can the ipad2 be value for money when its hard drive spec is very small? Surely the price of the ipad2 should be around 200 quid (taking into account its relatively tiny hard drive space). Even if people like the functions of an ipad2 - it seems a huge rip-off. The hard drive spec is too small to justify such a price tag. No wonder Apple is such a rich company when they charge so much for their products!”

What's the cheapest laptop that uses a solid state drive? Cheapest mac book air for example is £849.

Disc based hard drives are significantly cheaper than a solid state one which accounts for alot of he iPad price premium (but it's worth it for the speed, performance, power draw and size benefits)

Mine's got 64 GB and 3G. Think you got that wrong.

I have an iPad original,I bought the camera connection kit, my Panasonic can be read by the SD adaptor, the USB adaptor attaches to a powered USB card reader/hub, the power comes from a USB chargeable battery pack, the Olympus CF can be read by the card reader, and I even have attached a keyboard to the powered USB hub port.

Or I can directly attach the Olympus to the USB adaptor, by it's cable.

I think the primary reason Apple didn't fit a USB to the iPad was
a) form factor thin is beautiful
b) battery life, once you give a USB port, you asking for things to use it for power and that kills the 11 hour battery life and a big selling point.
