When I clicked this I was excited...as I enjoyed 'Michael' even if it was far below his best work.

but this seems like a really cheap cash-in of remixes and 'mash-ups'

what happened to the hundreds of unreleased songs? aren't they complete enough? are the producers blocking their release (Will with the stupid full stops from the Black Eyed Peas refuses to release the songs he produced for MJ) or are they just not good enough?

A much as I can't stand will.i.am, he is probably holding the songs back as Michael was such a perfectionist, it would be disrespectful to release them without his seal of approval and therefore, they shouldn't really see the light of day. Michael's got an amazing back catalogue that will live forever, do we really need any more album releases? Besides the fact that the song will never be complete without videos or performances, each song is an individual package is more than just the music on the record, so I'm happy for us just to have what he managed to share in his lifetime.

That said, the Immortal Tour looks incredible. I'm gonna try and get tickets to this!

I think it's more likely that he's planning to steal all Michael Jackson's ideas and then burn Jackson's originals.

Regarding 'Immortal', it is just the soundtrack to the Cirque Du Soleil show; a total cash-grab.

Sony has been doing this with Michael Jackson's catalogue for years. The number of greatest hits packages and reissues they put out while he was alive was insane - and fans giving them to him to sign said he sometimes wasn't even aware they'd been released.

There's talk of another album of unreleased material next year. Let's hope they don't foul it up as badly as they did with the last one, which included three tracks that were blatantly not even Michael Jackson.

I'm hoping for BAD25 next year. The original album re-released with a new disk of covers/remixes by modern artists....though I appreciate I am one of the few people who liked Thriller25!

the beatles on was pretty excellent and inventive, but they had a decent catalogue with few iffy tracks so had plenty to go on, plus of course the beatles actually played the music, real instruments, etc, so the whole thing from start to end was played by the beatles

the MJ one looks pretty crap by comparison. of course few people have heard it yet, but instead of being packed with hits and classic tracks, it's full of obscure stuff that most people don't know. instead of being a mashup of 80 minutes of hits, it's got far too many lesser known tracks. it might be appealing to the fanatics who will enjoy the crappy 90s album tracks, but i think it will be a turn off for more general fans who want to listen to stuff they know

another problem is going to be that MJ didn't play anything on the tracks, so drum loops, guitar and keyboard solos etc aren't going to be as interesting as on the beatles one. hopefully it won't sound like one of the awful DMC style megamixes with loads of drum machines, but transitioning from live drums to drum machines isn't so easy to do than all drum machines or all live drums, such as the beatles disc

regarding "new albums", there simply isn't enough unreleased songs of decent quality for these to be churned out, which is why the last one was so patchy, both in tracklist, and in the way it was stuck together with bits of tape and ansaphone messages. as he didn't record or even release anything for about 10 years, the back catalogue was pimped to hell and back and many of the unreleased songs were used to push sales of compilations of the same tracks that had been already released several times over. of the newer music of the last 10 years, it simply wasn't any good, which is why it wasn't released. imagine the worst of the last album "invincible" and you get a good idea of the unreleased stuff. overproduced drum machines and keyboards, lacking in melody and hooks

think of it this way, for one of the biggest selling artists in the world to have no released any new music in about a decade shows they didn't have anything worth releasing, as pretty much any record company would release almost anything from such an artist to make money. the fact they didn't speaks volumes. they wouldn't have taken ancient tracks and reworked them if they had more recent tracks they could have released

regarding the will.i.am stuff, the guy has an ego the size of a house. he will want it released, and once day it will be released. perhaps it's not very good material or it's incomplete, which is why it's not been released yet, but one day, just like 2pac, every fart he recorded will be sequenced to a drum machine and released

what they could be doing however is rereleasing his albums in legacy style editions, like what they did with marvin gaye and fleetwood mac. so you have the original album remastered, followed by b sides and unreleased songs, and a bonus disc or even two, with alternate unreleased mixes and demos of the tracks, in the running order of the album, so you can listen to the disc in full and hear a different take on the album, not in strictly chrono order so you have 2 or 3 versions of the same song together. no fade outs and edits and samples of songs, the full versions. no interviews (put them in text format or video format, or even free downloadable content), no bloody remixes that weren't from the original period - those should be kept for a separate project or if it was a 3 or 4 disc project with that crap kept well apart from the period music. so on 2 or 3 discs, even 4 discs or more like the new nevermind/DSOTM sets, with the full album remastered, demos, alt versions, and other tracks from that time

at the moment there are about 3 discs worth of thriller studio material in circulation in excellent quality that wasn't on the original album, so if nevermind can get a 4 disc treatment, so should thriller. a disc of both the instrumentals and acapellas would also be good

with bad there is a lot less material so that could be a 2 or 3 disc set if it's bundled with the moonwalker stuff. you have the 12" versions and instrumentals. probably no need to include the alt versions of some of the tracks as they aren't that different, and most people will already have them (the original cd pressings had different versions of tracks from later pressings that were edited slightly - the original versions should be on the remaster)

with the later stuff there was a bigger tendancy to have 42 remixes and edits of every track, most of which have little to no extra MJ material, and there isn't much in the way of actual unreleased songs as they stuck everything on the albums to fill the cd length out. so perhaps again the 2nd/3rd discs could be remixes, instrumentals and acapellas, but a disc of demos and unreleased alt mixes (by the original producers rather than remixers) could be interesting

they need to learn what was wrong about the previous reissues. spoken interviews wasting disc time, edited versions of tracks, or short samples of them, and bloody awful remixes that are more cover versions than remixes. there is a time and place for that stuff, and that should be a seperate remix project, as has been done with some of the earlier jacksons/5 stuff, some of which was pretty good as they kept to the spirit of the track and used what was recorded at the time without adding drum machines. there was a marvin gaye legacy edition where different people were asked to remix a track each of the full album, but only using what was recorded at the time, as if they were mixing the track in the early 70s. it came out quite well. likewise the miles davis remix albums were done in a similar manner and they were excellent, especially panthelassa

I'm not really sure what songs on immortal could be described as 'obscure', given that even his lowest selling studio album shifted almost 15million copies. 'Little Susie', 'Is It Scary', 'Ghosts', 'Threatened', 'This Place Hotel' and 'Speechless' are about the only tracks I might expect the general public not to know - and those are all part of medleys anyway.

It's a shame fans online haven't put together some kind of definitive list of unreleased material from outakes and demos. It would be nice to have each album to listen to in full then a seperate selection of outtakes and demos from that albums sessions but i guess sometimes it is hard for fans to pinpoint when an unreleased song originated from. It's alright saying there is 3 discs of unreleased Thriller material out there but where is it? How can you prove it is from the Thriller sessions? Where did they originate from? Why should i believe you? There are questions that need to be answered so that when future unreleased music is given to the public, which it will be, the fans can catalogue it appropriately.

On the Thriller 25 album, Sony included a song called 'For All Time' which was recorded during the Dangerous sessions!

well there you go, you named a few yourself. just because they sold a lot of albums doesn't mean every track will be well known. remember that some of the albums were released 20 or more years ago

of course the beatles split over 40 years ago, but there material is usually more well known, even non single tracks

the ones in bold are ones that i'd expect most casual listeners wouldn't be too familiar with. maybe even more, like gone too soon, childhood, etc

there are a few fan made bootlegs that compile albums in that kinda way. companions to the albums if you will, with demos and alternate mixes and stuff put together. the quality is generally excellent. so you have the full version of starlight instead of the pathetic 30 second sample that was released, 2 studio demos of billie jean plus the full length demo that again had a pathetic 90 second or so edit on the official release. other tracks are basically taken from official sources, such as the full length version of the lady is mine with the verse that was edited to keep the album to 45 mins, and the 12"s and instrumental versions, and the alternate mix of billie jean for guitar hero or whatever it was. things like that. the bad one compiles the early cd versions of tracks, plus 12"s and stuff from moonwalker etc

when you see some of the stuff it's surprising how much the arsed around with the normal albums in changing mixes and stuff for later releases

I think it would be great if they released a CD/MP3 comp containing all the 12 inch and extended dance versions of stuff from the late 70s-even some of the Jackson tracks-starting with Shake your body.

There where some very good mainstream mixes done in the 1990s of tracks from Thriller (most never released) although Wanna Be Starting Something (Bros in Rythm Mix) was featured somewhere, and then there was some of the big 'House' mixes of for example Scream (David Morales on remixing duties-with the infamous line stop f***ing with me' inserted) and They Dont Really Care About Us (Love to Infinity mix)-these where really big at the time and will hold a lot of memories for fans and clubbers during that period-they would also be great for younger fans and younger house music enthusiast as well.

I do have the Thriller demoes but i have heard they released the Billie Jean one officially and that's the kind of problem i am talking about. Sometimes artists can have several demoes of the same song so it's hard for fans to really compile a definitive list. So i might have 1 demo of Billie Jean but if i wanna find the other one it might take me hours.......unless they're labelled differently which it probably wont be. It's a hard thing to do. I've always enjoyed Michael's albums and have several demos which i love but i think it would be hard for me to compile that kind of collection you know. So i could have the Thriller album and then all the instrumentals, demos, outtakes, writers demos all separate. Then the Bad album, then the Dangerous album and here is all the instrumentals, acapellas, demos, outtakes from this album.

I'm not aware of anywhere online at all that does that kind of thing. I'm sure for the most part the tracks are easy enough to find but there is a lot more to it than that. I like things to be simple. I have collections like that for other artists but i'm much bigger fans of those artists. When it comes to Michael Jackson i really am only familiar with his studio albums, i don't know every single song that has been released or leaked or every B side that was released. It's overwhelming for me.

i've been storing music on my computers since the 90s so it's easy for me. it's also easy to stick into playlists in winamp and move the order about on the fly whilst playing

i keep everything organised so could pick each specific take or demo or mix

ten to a dozen tracks on a single disc is a reasonable amount

Does anyone think this album is good? Personally, I think its cashing in and re-hashing old songs with no new material!!
