So does this mean no iPhone 5?

With all the iPhone rumors that have been going around these last few months and Apple only announcing an iPhone 4S, does that mean it was just the rumors that made us think they would release 2 handsets (Inc. iPhone 5).
Looks like they have done what they did with the 3G, release the next handset as a 3GS, so it now looks like the 5 will be next years model, July 2012 or later.

Problem is, it was only ever rumors.

Fact is a beta version of itunes showed only an iphone 4S. There was never gonna be an iphone 5 and wont be till next year at this time.

One handset per year. Next one will be out next year. No idea what they will call it. Maybe the 5 or maybe the 4GS.

Apple have to wait for the Nexus Prime so they can copy all the features. Just like they copied all the features from the Nexus One.

Iphone 5 is here it's the Iphone 4S fifth generation model.

Why call it Iphone 5 when they can do it next year with a better update?

Most speculation pointed to an A5 chip and 8MP camera. That's what we have the rest of the speculation is for next year.

Nexus One (January 2010): Noise cancelling mic, 1 GHz processor, multitasking, camera flash, 5MP camera.

iPhone 4 (June 2010): Noise cancelling mic, 1 GHz processor, multitasking (sort of), camera flash (), 5MP camera.

The Nexus One was the first phone to feature noise cancelling mics and a 1 GHz processor. Apple had to get some 'inspiration' from Google to keep their phone up to date.

Not first at all, Fujitsu had a phone with noise cancelling mic in 2006. Also Toshiba had a 1GHz phone in 2009, and I'm sure I don't need to tell you they weren't first for multi-tasking, camera flash or 5MP as these have been about for years.

So both these phones took there ideas from third party's.

they're not so much great, let alone 'inspirational' ideas though, as fairly predictable and obvious spec upgrades.

Siri pretty good, as is the camera and its speed, the keynote is now on itunes, skip the first half to get to the iphone part.

There were certainly rumours of problems with the new case.

Form does not follow function for Apple so that hints at another one sometime soon.

For one, neither has a camera flash. They have that irritatingly useless LED. It isn't a flash.

5mp camera, multi tasking - both seen in 2007 on the N95.

And not forgetting multi tasking being seen on smartphones in 2002.

I've been very unimpressed with the ability of Android to multi task, although that could in part be caused by my running the Vega on a 2.2 cooked rom. Still unsure about making the move to Vegacomb.

Thing is, I can't see myself using Siri. I'd rather just quickly do it myself. I'm not really a voice recognition person. If the voice recognition is so good that it hits the mark every time, then I might use it occasionally in private. But I'm not going to get it out at work and start blabbing at my phone to set up an appointment.

I'm torn about the new iPhone. My contract runs out in December. I've had an Android for the past 16 months (HTC Desire) and generally liked it a lot, though the battery life sucks more than an iPhone (have had iPhones previously). That said, I do feel like rejoining the iPhone crew.

If the 4S underwhelms me though, I might just get a cheaper 8GB iPhone 4, as it might come at a bit of a discount.

One thing that one has to learn about Apple is they are nearly always behind the curve in their specs (whatever they claim to the contrary). The latest Android phones will beat the iPhone 4S hands down on the spec front. It's all about what kind of user you are, but you've got to weigh the nice shiny casing and iOS against the better specs of an Android. All personal choice.
