I am thinking about ordering an Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB. Just wanted to know what thought about it and what is it like. If I get it, it would be just from making calls, texting, using apps like Facebook, Twitter and a few others and to put a couple of albums of music on it.

Absolutly perfect for all that and more. And now even cheaper since yesterdays announcement.

The 3GS is still a great device.

You may want to see where the new iPhone 4 8GB will sit in terms of price before making the decision now. The 3GS is still a good phone though it is a couple of generations out of date and if the new budget model of the iPhone 4 isn't too expensive it may be worth a look

Hopefully won't be long before the networks decide to tell us

EDIT sorry the above assumes you want it on a monthly contract. If you are buying the device outright Apple's website has already updated with pricing

Yeah it will be on monthly contract and T-mobile are charging £30 a month over 24 months which doesn't bother me.

That actually seems quite expensive for an iPhone 3GS. I'm sure I've seen O2 and 3 doing them for £20 a month

If the networks are taking pre-orders for the 4S this Friday I think they'll also be revising the price plans for other iPhone models. Wait a couple of days is my advice. You may find a low-end iPhone 4 is suddenly available for the amount you want to pay. The higher-definition screen makes it worthwhile, especially if you're going to be reading websites and texting.

Yes, O2 has the 3GS free for £21.50 per month for 24 months or £27 for 18 months. Only 100 min and 500 texts though.

If you're going to get an iPhone you may as well pay the extra for the 3G data bolt-on. I think it's £6/month for 500MB with O2.

I'll echo the other posters, for what you want, the 3gs is a great little option. However I certainly think you can get it for £20 a month now, or you might want to consider waiting a week or two for the 4 to come down in price and get the added benefits with that. Depends what you want more, extra money or extra features.

It is, but it's included in the "monthly cost" quoted by O2. So a 3GS is free for a monthly cost of £21.50, which is a £15.50 tariff plus a £6 data bolt-on.

Ah OK. Didn't realise that had already been factored in

I'm really intrigued to see what the iPhone 4 pricing will be like now. I mean, if it's a pretty good reduction it might be worth going for: you're going to have the form factor of the new iPhone but (hopefully) at a nice reduced price.

Might be worth having a look. I had a 3GS though and really liked it, and I suppose it's likely to get even more affordable now.

I forgot to put in the thread that would include so called Unlimited internet package under a FUP and also Unlimited Landline Phone calls with 300 minutes and 300 texts. So basically my free minutes will be used up if I phoned other mobiles and I phone a lot and text a lot.

Just had a look at O2 and it is much much dearer than what I would be getting from T-mobile. It would cost me £36.00 if I wanted the 300 minutes and unlimited texts and 1GB of data with O2 so it looks like T-Mobile is a lot cheaper.

That would be the unlimited Internet package that t-mobile can no longer describe as being truly unlimited after getting in bother with the ASA

As myself and others have said I'd at least wait for the dust to settle from yesterday's announcement as the 3GS may well fall further in price and you may find the budget model of iPhone 4 also drops to be in line with the £30 a month you are wanting to pay. Given the higher model of iPhone 4 can be picked up for £30 a month now it's an almost certainly the new budget model will be in the same price area

Personally i would wait to see how much all the networks charge for the iPhone 4 8GB as i reckon you will pick it up for free with a £30 contract.

Orange have the iPhone 3GS for free on £15 a month tariff exlusively on their website.

Beats any of the deals above

I will add that is only for 50 mins, 50 texts and 100MB of data and a 24 month contract.

In comparison Three offer 100 mins, 5000 texts and 500MB of data for an extra fiver but even then waiting to see the deals on the iPhone 4 8GB is worth it as the 3GS deals aren't going anywhere.

You can get a Sony X8 PAYG for £60
Better CPU on the Apple, better GPU on the Sony.

Many top end phones can often be found for that £15 per month.
With a lot of luck you might even find the iPhone 4 for that near 4s release day..
