Personally, I'd feel a complete tit wandering about in public "talking to myself" by using a bluetooth earpiece but it seems like it's a pretty common thing.
For people who
do use a bluetooth earpiece regularly, it'll probably be acceptable.
Besides, I'm not sure a willingness to do something in public is a valid litmus test for usefulness.
As I said, I wouldn't use a bluetooth earpiece in public but I have one for use in the car or on my bike or when I'm hiking or when it's raining and I don't want my phone to get wet etc.
If it was valid to criticise gadget features on the basis that they don't get used most of the time we'd all still be using Nokia 3310s and we'd be perfectly happy with them.
