Signal senders - how do they work?

We've just got a Freeview PVR and are thinking of getting one of those boxes that sends the signal upstairs to the TV in our bedroom.

However, when we record something onto video from a digital channel and watch it upstairs (TV is a combi) the picture is distorted as it was broadcast in widescreen and so we have to watch it in 'thin' vision. Would the same happen with watching something we've 'taped' onto the PVR from Freeview and sent to the TV upstairs with the signal sender?

You need to set the PVR to output a "letterboxed" picture (ie widescreen with black bars top and bottom) while you're copying to tape.

I dont know if your PVR is anything like a SKY box, but you just go into the picture menu and tell it your tv is 4:3.
You'll need to keep this setting if you intend sending the signal to your bedroom tv with a video sender.

A video sender sends exactly what you give it, so if it's fed a widescreen picture, that's what arrives at the other end and it will lool 'thin' on a conventional TV.

So the only way to get a correct picture ratio is to have a VCR in the bedroom that has 16:9 and 4:3 settings for playback.

I have a cheap Daiwoo one which does it.

Check the menu of your combi in its picture settings - you might be lucky.
