Rapper Example makes "Gaycrisps" trend on Twitter
Today British rapper/electro artist Example asked fans to get "#gaycrisps" to trend on Twitter.
It did. Some people are claiming Gay means happy... but example wanted to make it trend for "lame horrid crisps you do not like" What is your view on this? Do you think it is offensive, or do you think it is funny? Light hearted? Or making the word gay used in bad context seem more glam? ![]() Related content from Digital Spy:

Not in the slightest bit offensive but also not in the slightest bit funny.
If that is his sense of humour then fair enough but if people are offended by it then that's pathetic. |

The Gaurdian are also helping it trend.
I think some people concerns are that they are using the word Gay to promote their least favourite brand of crisps. Some are taking it light hearted though, maybe that is not as bad... I have some tweets though that are... using it as a chance to gay bash. I can see this one getting out of hand lol The latter part is why I think Examples idea wasn't thought out too well - if it turns bad that is,. |

I think he used it as a quote from Little Britain which was on a couple of days ago
"If I get peckish I could just open a packet of gay crips" |

I knew it would get silly... now straight peeps (guys mostly) are calling offended homosexual people "Benders, gays and puffs" and saying "NoHomo" for not thinking it is funny...

Whilst gay literally means happy, in this day and age it is only associated with something "lame". The amount of "that's so gay..." phrases I've heard in response to something that the person perceives as bad is uncountable.
Then again... Example must hate a lot of crisps, unless he's talking about them making him happy. I don't know... It's pretty stupid and he should pick his words better. |

Pisses me off when people complain about 'gay' being used as a derogatory term.
When people say 'oh that's so gay' they're not saying 'that's so homosexual', they're just using a word to express crapness. It has no connection to sexuality at all in that context. It probably originates from people being homophobic but nowadays it really doesn't mean that. Get over it. |

I notice his supporters or other homophobic people are out in force on Twitter to defend him and to tell other people to "get over it" and "man up". I find it quite sad that there are people willing to defend it too.
There should be no need for anyone to label anything or any lifestyle as gay. No need at all. He's lost any respect from me. Should have used a different term, instead he deliberately used the term gay to get attention, and its worked. |

BoyGeorge was offending by Example... so they had a bit of a exchange.
Now Example says "I like gay people, I like Boy George!" |

Obviously, this is providing a platform for homophobic people to speak out, which isn't good, but you don't know what exactly Example meant with all this. I will reserve making judgement on him until I get more information personally. |

It doesn't matter if he's talking about crisps or people, the point is he's using the word "gay" in a derogatory manner. Though after seeing more of his tweets, it's clear that he has the intelligence of a pigeon wandering around eating crisp crumbs off the concrete if he views certain crisps as "camp".

Using "gay" in a derogatory manner is not okay, but I don't care. He's an absolute idiot, he's already a lost cause.

It's offensive, the man may not have meant to cause offence but you'd like to think that it even crossed his mind that it might be found offensive.
What a total n***er. I'm using that in a new, non-offensive to black people manner, I merely mean 'person who things something is funny but I totally misguided'. Is that alright, or is it as I suspect completely out of line? |

He is nearly thirty years old but seriously has the maturity of a ten year old. I remember when the London riots were happening and he was like 'Oh I don't know or care what's happening there, but I'm living it up with champagne here in Ibizai!' What a prick!
Someone needs to give the horsey-looking ****er with a gigantic gob a beat down. |

Using "gay" in such a way is stupid, but at least you can excuse most for mindlessly following trend before engaging their brains.
However, those who defend it's use and tell people to get over it, on the other hand, are simply ignorant and offensive. Equating "gay" with any sort of negative is homophobic. That's what the phrase is intended to communicate, and by using it you're supporting that. "Why don't you Jew off and stop being so black about it." |

I agree. The people who say "get over it" are either not gay, have no gay friends to able to respect the gay community or quite frankly Homophobic.

Pop stars used to want to change the world now they just want to discuss crisps. It's so sad.
