Beyonce - Skin Getting Paler

Is it just me or is Beyonce getting paler with each music video she releases? She used to be proper dark skinned when she was in Destiny's Child, and now she is very very pale. What gives? Is she not happy being who she is or has she got the same disease Michael Jackson had?

I understand videos can be photoshopped (if that's the right word!) and lighting can make skin look darker or paler, but she has done this on a few videos now.

Wasn't she called up on during the Sasha Fierce 'era' for whitening her skin in videos & photoshoots?

She's mixed race isn't she? Her mum is white and her dad is black

Well kind of, her mother's Creole, a mixture of races and her dad's black. But she was definately darker in the earlier days of her career. Wonder if she's done something to herself or she just naturally got lighter toned.

She whitens her skin I think, I seem to remember reading it somewhere.

Maybe, it's the make-up.In her interviews she still seems like a normal black girl, not very dark but not light-skinned either.I don't personally think there's something wrong with her or that she got some sort of surgery, but I would expect ANY sneaky trick by this woman. When I heard that she used a prosthetic bump for her VMA's stunt, I was so shocked that now I think she's capable of pulling off every shady trick there is

Can this even happen, though?

I've noticed this with Jennifer Hudson too, when she was on XF a few weeks back...

Other people have said the same thing about Beyonce. I never noticed anything though, personally.

Is it not quite a common thing for black women to wear some sort of highlighting foundation on their cheek bones to make them look more luminescent? Nicki Minaj and Beyonce definitely look like they wear a lot of it.

Oddly, I noticed that they did it on Gaga too along with Beyonce in the shot of them in the car in Telephone. There's very obvious whitening going on.

No, she isn't mixed race. Her mother is not white, she is Creole, which is a mixture of all sorts.

She looks the same to me. Stood next to Alexandra, who is relatively dark, she is just a shade lighter:

It's just make up and lighting

Here is a new interview where she is a darker shade

She's light skinned anyway. I'm light skinned, my skin changes shades from summer to winter, from daytime to night time, it's normal.

Quite simply, if you spend more time in the sun, regardless of whether you are black, white, hispanic, asian or whatnot your skin might well get darker, or lighter if you aren't in it as much, the extent to which this happnends is different from person to person.

Its all just the reaction of melanin being exposed to the sun, could be as simple as Beyonce doesn't get to sun bath as much these days.

No need for mystery illnesses, cosmetics, surgery, photoshop or anything else. Sometimes the most likely explanation is the simplest one.

Actually you could go lighter.

I had a very dark skin as a teenager. I was exposed a lot to the sun as i was living in the Middle East where temperatures are ridiculously high. I don't recognise myself sometimes in photos. I'm now light skinned which i agree with neel that it can be due to the Sun factor.

Don't forget how Beyonce's father worked the girls so hard for long hours under the sun doing all sort of things.

I agree. Remember she lived in a very hot Texas all of the time she was in Destiny Child so naturally she was darker then, compared to now where her main residence is in cold New York.

I just think it depends on what she's wearing, the colour of her hair, the lighting at the time, make-up etc. that factor into what her skin looks like.

I mean, look at Mariah Carey. She's biracial and there are times where she's looked dark:

times where she's looked completely white:
http://www.mariahjournal.com/picture...rispromo/3.jpg

and then back to dark:

That pic of her as a kid is proof that her skin tone has hardly changed at all in the last 20+ years! It's a silly story that needs to be put to bed once and for all.

Newsflash - people look different in bright lights and with different makeup.

So, she has a mixed race heritage but isn't mixed race, please explain?

I think what the poster meant is that she does not have two culturally mixed parents (i.e. Creoles largely identify as black) but she does have a mixed heritage in her lineage as most Black Americans do.

Yes, lightening, make up and the season makes you lighter but in some shoots she looks a lot lighter. Light skin/mixed race skin tone doesn't fluctuate as much as Beyonce's does. Good luck to her whatever she is up to.

I was responding to someone who said Beyonce's mum is white.

She isn't.
