That is because you are recording or playing back something.

Hi Gomez, is this answer for me? if it is, I've started watching recordings while they are still being recorded and never had a problem or do you mean that if you are recocding 2 programes you can't watch one from the start or it causes a clash and then crashes, still trying to fathom the surround menu set up and now this!

Thanks in advance

I mean you can't check the firmware version number while making or watching a recording.

I then released that I'd forgotten to set something up, so I went back into the EPG from live viewing and this time, the box froze. I couldn't scroll the EPG at all, nor could I exit from it using the remote. I left it alone for a few minutes, switching to another HDMI input on my TV, but when I switched back to the Humax all I could see was a black screen, even though the front panel was still showing the word 'GUIDE'. I couldn't power the box off using the remote, so I power-cycled it using the rear panel mains switch. After booting I could access the EPG as normal and all seems well again at present, although I haven't checked any recordings made since the incident.

Anyone had anything similar?
Clem”

I had a call from my mum sat evening with a very similar problem so I suggested swithing off at the rear for a few mins and that cured the prob.

I had a crash on my own hdr yesterday and all I did was press the info button, fine before the .17 update. So you may be on to something.

I had my first crash ever a week ago last Sunday. I think the .17 software was on by then? I was recording "Downton Abbey" from ITV1HD, and watching and re-winding something else at the same time and the controls froze. Had to resort to power-cycling. DA was still recording OK as it turned out, it was just the controls that were locked out. I started recording DA again manually after the re-boot as it doesn't pick it up automatically. Got a "broken" recording of the original, which played OK up to the point I re-booted. The manual recording was OK too. Missed 3 or 4 mins during the re-boot but recorded the prog again from ITV1+1 to get it. Thought it was a fluke, hadn't put it down to the new software. No problems since. I'll keep an eye on that.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me then (not that I want anyone to have problems!). Given that a number of people have reported issues it does sound as if something might be a miss. If I get a chance I'll call Humax to see what they say and report back.

Does anyone from Humax see these threads now?

I am sure that they do - I have not seen any reports in other places and my HDR is fine - my last reboot was a year ago at least (in very heavry rain - with the channel breaking up.

Cheers Gomez, wondered why the icon was greyed out

Thanks

I has a spontaneous reboot whilst recording last week, though not encountered any freezes.

I had it attempt to record the same thing twice last week. One became a zero-length bad recording (no surprise there), the other one became a runaway recording and the box would not go back into full standby even after the recording was manually stopped. Needed to power-cycle.

Even after this update I'm still having trouble with the EPG freezing and becoming unresponsive, I have to re-boot to sort it.

The strange thing is they havent just put it back to how it was before.

Now the sound and vision comes back when you schedule and then cuts out after.

Before it just stayed away and was perfect.

There must be more to it than meets the eye. You'd think it would be the easiest thing in the world to put the old functionality back, or to make "Guide" do what schedule+red does. There must be some bug/issue with those two options that they're trying to avoid.

Cheers,
David.

There might be something stopping them going back to the old way but theres nothing stopping them switching what the buttons do.

With zero user testing, you get an illogical box when its only tested by engineers.

If you think about it they don't have the live UK TV aerial feed to test with.

I seem to remember that the notes said that the EPG would update - if you try and set a recording it will terminate but restart when you exit the EPG item.

The sound and vision never "just stayed away" both resumed after the EPG was refreshed.

I meant it stayed away until the EPG download was completed.

Its more annoying now having audio cut in and out every time you set a recording, its a real bodge job.

I called Humax today regarding my EPG hang issue. The guy I spoke with said that he didn't know of any 'hang' type issues with the '17' firmware, but did say that Humax was aware that there were still some EPG speed issues (read: the EPG is still slow).

All he suggested regarding the box hang was to always do a factory reset after any software upgrade and that should stop any such hang issues. Really?

I assume there was some kind of thread race condition whereby the item being scheduled could get updated in the background as it was being scheduled and therefore get corrupted leading to a possibly missed recording.

Therefore it seems like the change they've made completely stops the EPG updates when you open the schedule dialog and I'd imagine the consequence of this is that another thread then takes this as its cue to start displaying the picture and sound - just as would happen when the full EPG update finished at the end.

So it seems to me like they've made quite a conservative change to fix this, presumably not wanting to touch the innards of the EPG handling code too much. In a way I'm okay with that, as I'd rather they made small/conservative changes than rewrote a large part of it and introduced a major bug in the process, especially when maintenance naturally won't have the same level of resources available as there were when the firmware was first written. I value a stable box above all else.

This might be a long shot but when it was taking several minutes to d/l the EPG or it never completed at all, a freesat scan without saving the results fixed this.

Id try that 1st, then do a reset if it doesnt work.

I had a strange occurrence yesterday when I brought the box out of standby. The display backlight illuminated, the red light changed to blue (all normal so far), but 'BOOT' did not appear on the display. Nothing more happened, there was no disk activity and I had to power cycle to get out of the lockup. I think this has only ever happened once before in all the years I have had the Humax. Hope this is not a sign of things to come. Is it possible to revert to the .15 firmware?
Flyer 10

Not possible to revert as it always auto updates every day without a way to turn it off.

Yes you can reflash the firmware but while the new one is ota you will have to disable housekeeping to avoid the auto update. Either set a power on for say 02:45-03:15. or set a daily manually repeating watch reservation for the same period.

Geoff_W;

To add to G.T.'s post - you would also have to do occasional freesat scans as you would miss channel changes.

Cheers -- I'll give that a go if I get any more issues. That said, there does seem to be a growing list of people, me included, that seem to be having issues post the '17' update. Personally I think it's now too much of a coincidence.
