I'm confused if you're adverse to purchasing things online, why would you want a Kindle? You buy everthing online for a Kindle you can't wander into a Waterstones and buy books.

If you walk into Currys and buy one then youre still going to have to create an account with Amazon to link it up to as far as I know

Don't spoil it.

I was looking forward to reading the next angry post from the OP about phoning amazon to buy an ebook and being told that he'd have to buy it online.

It's actually not their loss either even if you bought one at Pc World cos the money will still go to Amazon anyway.

but its strange for a business to turn its nose up at a cast iron sale and £159 cash .... !
they are obviously not bothered !

PC World are selling the kindle 3g
but it seems that Amazon have put certain restrictions on them
they can sell it ONLY in store,
they cant offer to deliver it !

Amazon WILL deliver, but it seems you have to order on line !

Are you for real?

You phoned Amazon up to make an order? You do realise Amazon isn't a catalogue? It is an "Online retailer" - the clue is in the name.

Also, as Amazon decide who are allowed to sell their Kindle, all the money paid goes back to Amazon - it's to allow people to buy them spur of the moment.

For what it's worth, you'll need to sign up for an Amazon accout to use your Kindle anyway. You can't use it without one.

Perhaps a Sony eReader would be more suitable? http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/reader-ebook

No 3g or web browser though

Sorry Timbo I don't get your problem. Go and buy your Kindle in PC World then try and buy a book without opening an account. You can get ebooks on it without buying them from Amazon... but the headache it may cause if you aren't technically minded is not worth it given how smooth Amazon have made their system.

Secondly what are you afraid of? Your bank account, credit card details are already online. You may choose not to use the facility, but it's all there. You're just as likely to be shafted by using your credit card in any high street retailer, probably more so.

If you don't want to move with the times, fine! Just buy a book from your local bookshop! It's like buying a smartphone and moaning that you need an account with service provider.

My credit card details are n't online mainly because I don't have a credit card.
Ive never ever bought a button on line, I was going to order by phone and give amazon my debit card details.

Besides, I dont want to buy an e book from amazon there is a ton of books and novels already on my comp... mainly from Guttenberg on line ( free )
I want to use kindle to read them and also listen with the text to speech option.

If ever I get to a hot spot I can also use the pad to surf the net for free.
( not in colour though I don't think ! )

I don't understand your problem with buying something online. It's safer than giving your card number to someone over the phone.

The only thing I like about the new Sony readers are built in multilingual dictionaries. Kindle has 2 English ones and you have to buy anything else. Other than that the Sony readers are just too expensive compared to Kindle.

Don't get too worked up about surfing the net via Kindle: it's slow and fiddly. They list it as "experimental" for a reason.

I think you will find that the text to speech feature does not work with all e-books loaded onto the Kindle

It does not even work with all e-books purchased from Amazon, they have to be enabled by the publisher!

It's also worth pointing out that the voice used by the TTS is awful.

You can buy them as Tesco's as well - might be closer than PC World?.

I bought mine at PC World, then called for some bread on the way home (at the much closer to homeTesco's) to find a big stack of them!. I called for bread yesterday as well, still got them in stock.

Also, why are you spending extra on the 3G version?, again you need an Amazon account to use the 3G - which is free for downloading books from Amazon.

As far as I can remember, you need to sign up to active the Kindle as well, it doesn't work out of the box.

You don't need a credit card to sign up, your debit card is fine.
