The customer staff are there to help with advice on returns, faults, warranties etc.
If they tried to take orders on the phone, they would need 1000s of new staff and the prices would go up. They want buyers to do the work, not themselves. |

Amazon's computer infrastructure is massive, there probably isn't enough phones to complement that power
I remember some people wanted to bring Amazon down with a DoS attack, but they had to give up. Amazon can sustain the whole world xmas shopping at Amazon 'attack', this was nothing. That's the amount of orders they are dealing with, they can't have people on the phones taking orders, they would serve just a fraction of requests.

You've been advised by enough people here about TTS not working on books (publisher feature), about using 3G for surfing - this isn't an IPad (use your phone instead), and how dragging and dropping 'free' books will remove the joy of wirelessly loading books onto the Kindle in a matter of seconds. No matter what you think, you're already on the 'grid' if you've ever bought anything in a shop or remotely. Just go with it, get an Amazon account and enjoy Kindle to its full extent. |

U have to register the Kindle for full functionality, but that costs nothing, and you can do it on the device itself.
As said, to purchase ebooks from amazon, u need an account. |

Very likely you won't be able to use 3G without registration.

If you hit the alt+z keys simultaneously, it also fires lasers out of the screen...
Let's all just sit back and enjoy. |

amazon.co.uk Kindle Store Dept
Kindle Support link is top right Click Getting Started and the other links eg FAQs When you get home with your new one, the Quick Start Guide really only tells you where the On button/slider is and How to Register. I thought the amazon.co.uk pages were really rather good. I won mine in a competition and was very impressed and nearly kept it. eBay won in the end. |

![]() With both Kindles (non-3G - didn't see the point in 3G) registered on the same account, both Kindles can receive all the books ordered for either. |

As for pictures, create a top level folder on your Kindle called "pictures", create subfolders in that folder, their names will be the names of collections visible in the list of the "books", copy jpgs into these subfolders. When you unplug the Kindle from USB, press 'ALT' and 'Z', It will refresh the list and you should see your subdirectories there.

Thanks for that info Ivan,
I dragged the pics over, but maybe I should have put them in the pictures folder. There's no reason why it should nt play them.... if only in black and white ! No doubt Kindle 4 will have colour !!! but I cant wait that long. I thought that I would only be able to get onto the web when I was near a hotspot ... like Macdonalds or an airport or somewhere but ... bingo ..... its working and Im surfing the net ... with no wires !!! this is brilliant... surfing the web for free !!!! Don t think there is any way of saving text or info or files though .... but anyway, it s great to be able to surf the net for free wot a great gizmo ! Money well spent ! I went to register with amazon but when it got to the part .... type in your credit card details... I hit the back button.... no way hose ! |

Oh grow up. Amazon are as safe as houses. Stop being so paranoid and register. If you don't register some functionality of the Kindle won't be available to you. |

Why do you have a credit card if you don't want to use it? If you won't use it on Amazon, where will you use it?

Besides, there are also things people sometimes try to do with their Kindle which aren't available unless you have registered it with Amazon. You can also download free samples of books to your Kindle if you've registered. It's easy, and safe. If you prefer you can wear a tin-foil helmet while you do it. |
