Timbo.

In the brief time I had mine, I did notice various Google stuff for 'kindle 3 tips and tricks' and 'hacks'.
A lot of which are workarounds for features you think may not be possible.

Don't go trying to 'root' it and break it though.

I suppose there are some benefits to get by registering

just saw this on a forum

http://www.amazon.com/Catherine-De-M...=5336612473-20

I guess there might be a big, free library of books up there that I could be downloading for free !

It isn't available outside the USA.

The flame isn't an e-reader

One other thing: as the Fire is heavily reliant on Amazon's cloud services you would have no choice but to register one of those. We all know you don't want to do that.

The two are very very different. The Fire (no UK release date yet) can read ebooks, but it isn't an eReader and for those who use eReaders with eInk will tell you, there's no comparison. Battery life to name just one. If you are looking for a great way to carry a convenient device so you can read books where ever you are without having to charge it up every day, Kindle is what you want. If you want a tablet... that's another discussion entirely!

Enjoy whatever you get.

it looks pretty awe inspiring to
me and $199 !!!!!

Holy Cow if that has free 3g too
it makes the kindle I just bought look like the stone age.

It looks to be a text reader, 10 to 1 it will have text to speech
.... full colour and all for virtually the same price
You d think there d be a release date in the UK .. wots the prob ?

Add to that it has 8 gig of storage !!!
( 3 gig in my current kindle ! )

I haven't seen any mention of free 3g
I assume its this 3g (mobile network ) that is currently allowing me to surf the net ( in black and white )

maybe that's the down side of it

I think if the 3g was included the title would be Kindle Fire 3g

If that was released in UK with free 3g .... at 149 squid .... there'd be a stampede !

''In black and white'', the Kindle is an eBook reader, the browser is just a stupid add-on that you can use if you want to. Try reading a book on a device like the Fire (ie. with a bright screen) and see how long you last before you (or your eyes) give up.

Tesco is no quibble, reset yours and take it back if really disappointed now.

But as mentioned, they are very different.

I would keep what you have just bought and save pennies for a Tablet.

The grass is always greener...

The Fire relies upon Amazon's cloud services. It's tied to Amazon for music, videos, apps, books, etc. ... but not all of those services are available in the UK / outside the US yet, hence the initial release is US-only.

We won't get the Fire over here until/unless Amazon sorts out the rest of its services over here.

MAYBE you are right,
besides the kindle fire may not get here till may or june next year ? who knows and somehow I doubt that it
will have free internet browsing as I can get right now on this kindle 3

But Tesco seem quite laid back about returns.... so Ive got that option !

Kindle Fire doesn't have 3G.

Thinking about it... ok kindle 3 has free web browsing...
but surfing the web in black and white is pretty bleak

add to that the navigation is very basic
and it does nt play you tube videos...
I dont think it plays audio files on the web either
so its pretty dire.

It does nt seem to enlarge text on the web enough to make reading easy....

Maybe I could use it to send the odd e mail, but its going to be pretty fiddly to do that.

Another minus mark on the kindle 3g is playing mp3 files.

I put an mp3 on that was 60 mins.
I listened to 20 mins then turned off
I turned back on later and expected to resume at the point I left.... but no, the file started again at the beginning ...!!!!
so that is a bit of a drag.

Some how, in a years time when kindle fire has kicked in with full living colour, then second hand kindle 3s will be on e bay for £9.99 and free postage !

You seem to be failing to grasp that the Kindle is primarily an E-reader with an E-ink screen. It is designed to give a reading experience as close to reading a normal printed page as possible, with the added bonus of being light weight and able to store 100s of books.

Everything else it can do is a bonus feature and not it's selling point, the "experimental" browser isn't going to be as good as surfing on a PC, tablet or phone. likewise the MP3 player isn't going to have the functionality of an Ipod. What you want is a tablet, get an Ipad if you can't wait for the Fire.

None of the features you have mentioned are reasons to buy an e-ink Kindle. It's for reading text. The other features are nice extras but are hidden behind the 'experimental' button, surely that should tell you something?

I agree, there are many pluses..
the text is brilliant and easy to read.
( hopefully the resume will be better than the mp3s ! )

The text to speech is very good and listenable.

The sound on mp3s is good.... you just got to listen through the 60 min audio till the end because it wont " resume " ( like it says it will ! )

With 3 gig of storage.... textwise that is a lot .... with god knows what looming up in the cloud too !

I cant complain, its a brilliant bit of kit .

Chances are if they do introduce the cloud services in the UK you'll have to register with Amazon to access them... which you won't do.

You've done nothing but complain on here since you got it. "It won't play YouTube videos, it's not great at MP3s, it's black and white..."

Unbelievable. It's taken until now for you to realise that the Kindle is an e-reader first and foremost. Everything else is experimental. 'Doesn't play Youtube videos'...sheesh.

All this advice you received, which you just pretty much ignored and plowed ahead like a bull in a china shop.

Well, hope you manage to enjoy reading books on it - exactly what it's designed for.

I was hoping it would hoover the lounge and do the washing up too...

It managed the lounge ok... but the washing up was a problem.... it almost short circuited !!!

Well I don't think you have complained too much. Mebbe a little for the forum.

iPod Touch perhaps for more functionality.
(surfing)

When you can get 10s of thousands of books free, it's a winner.

And like the Duracell Bunnie, it just goes on and on and on.

And 3G anywhere in the world? Subject to things not changing.

Who needs Wetherspoons/McDonalds/Starbucks etc where you have to buy a beer or Coffee

Dunno your politics or interests.

Free Dickens and other classics don't turn me on. I have enough on my bookshelves from the charity shop. I try them every now and again and give up. Unusual for me, I read everything.

But I loved. Alexander Solzehnytzin 'Gulag Archipelago'
And Alexander Dolgun 'An American in the Gulag'

So many more good books
Catch 22
Lord of the Rings
Midwich Cuckoos
The Magus

These give a flavour of the authors for other, hopefully free downloads.

Google, Google, Google, what turns you on.
