If you have a properly registered 3g enabled kindle they can be delivered by 3g or by wifi.

This includes free books, not just ones that need paying for.

I cant see why they wont let me register and then.... if I at some
later date order a book, THEN...
I send them my debit card details.

I dont see why I have to start giving card details just to register the product with amazon.

BUT ... it looks like... either you fill in the form and enter credit or debit card details ....or you dont get your mits on the huge, free catalogue of goodies !

sometimes the internet feels like a series of hoops that we are all required to jump through !

Don't you have wireless Internet at home? You joined this forum 6 years ago yet from your posts you'd think you were from another planet.

Cloud means your content is stored on their servers. You can access it easily as it's always there. Sure you can download it, but it's always there regardless of whether your Kindle, PC or whatever gets lost, goes faulty or anything.

I didn't either until I got a wireless device 2 yrs ago (new laptop)

Phoned AOL up and said 'I have a problem'
'No problem, we will send you a new wireless router, reduce your £17.99 pcm to £9.99 pcm, you will still be Unlimited and 2Mbps will be upto 8Mbps (actually 4Mbps but that's the exchange and copper distance)'

All they wanted was me not to leave for 18 months (which I haven't, now 10 yrs with them)
I didn't even threaten to leave.

I don't have it either. Virgin refused to give me a router and practically hung up when I mentioned Linux.

Not really. Depends when you got your router. I guess if you get one now, it would be difficult not to have one that was wired and wireless.

Why are you so paranoid about providing your card details to one of the most reliable, secure and largest on-line retailers in the world? Have you been stung, in some previous life or something? You're making this all very difficult for yourself, for no apparent reason.

You should be able to register your Kindle without a credit/debit card being attached to your account.

well you try doing it on your kindle
it goes next ...
then ... enter your card details here....

I then went to register on line
punched in the kindle reg No and it said... that kindle is already registered under another name....
so the mix up goes on and on

add to that you see the long No.
to type in... maybe BHO365TYOW34 ETC

THOSE O's are they the letter O or the No. O ?

I ve got an e mail link with amazon ......... hopefully they will sort it out .

Finally got things sorted (without typing in my bank details ) and
received my first e book through the ether.... Catherine de Medici... by Balzac !
How cool is that !
The Amazon Kindle is a brilliant piece of kit and well worth the £149 !

Looks like there are a ton of free books up there too !

No it's not, I have my house wired for Ethernet and that is superior both for security and throughput. I could easily replace my Ethernet router with a wireless one but see no benefit.

You'll need to sign up to use it. What's the problem? Ah....it's you.

This also means you have to use all your devices on a fixed location. I use a mix of Ethernet and wifi. For devices like the TV, Xbox, ps3, NAS... Are all on Ethernet for faster speed for streaming and better ping in games. For stuff like my laptop, iPad, iPhone I use wifi as wireless N is plenty fast for Internet browsing and WPA2 is plenty secure. This means I can use them while on the sofa and so forth.

Disagree with this, the screens I've tried are fine plus you can at least read with the light off!! The present uk kindle looks so antiquated now...The fire looks like the real deal.

A different device for a different purpose - Kindle is an e-reader, and perfect as that. Fire is a device that also functions as an e-reader, but with many limitations that Kindle doesn't have (such as outside in bright light and poor battery life).

The Kindle is probably as close to a book as you can get - and you don't try and read books in the dark

Do you read books in the dark? If you can, then you don't need an e-reader, you're Batman.

From the get go I did nt like the idea of wi fi
maybe those google vans that nabbed everyones e mail addresses via wi fi and put them together with their "real " addresses... proved my point...
another step forward for big brother !

Getting back to kindle, is it possible to save a photo while browsing the net ?

Only if you're wearing a tinfoil hat.
