I'm in North America (Eastern side) and my BBM and internet has gone down. At the moment, I can still text. I am furious about this, because I specifically bought the BB to use BBM which is free for friends and family back home to message me while I'm away (I'm away for about 3 months). It's all very well saying pick up the phone, or get to a computer, but it's very hard to do so whilst on the move. (I'm moving around hostels every few days.) If I was still at home, it wouldn't be a problem, but I'm feeling very cut off right now.

Btw, I also took the option of BBM over however-many-free-landline-minutes, as I could keep in touch with more people that way... So now I'm stuck with it, because the T&Cs state they aren't responsible for outages..
Why not just use Whatsapp? Its free and does the same job if not better.

Trying to get everyone I want to get in touch with for a few days while this is going on is a nightmare. Some will, but most say they'll just wait for it to be resolved. To be fair, I guess they didn't realise it would go on so long...

Why do you need RIM's servers to access the internet?

Well exactly. That might have been a good way to do it five years ago but shows how inefficient their fundamental strategy is in this day and age.

It does seem archaic - unless you are a corporate that is buying a service from RIM to manage corporate email then where is the benefit over just using the Mobile operators Internet gateway like any other mobile phone manufacture?

You don't have to, install Opera and use that instead!

As for those saying "should have had a BES", well we do have one of those, and we're seeing email failures, delays and problems activating new devices - so it's not just consumers affected.

There are normally benefits in having the traffic routed through blackberry's systems - including compression (so you can do more with your monthly limit) and security - if you're using starbucks type wifi, everything goes back to blackberry encrypted, before being sent on.

I've found that by switching "Internet Browser" to "Orange World", I can get back online.

I can live without BBM for now.

Mine is still down! It's been two days now, so even though I'm trying to be patient it's starting to look pretty bad on Blackberry's part.

As for those saying "should have had a BES", well we do have one of those, and we're seeing email failures, delays and problems activating new devices - so it's not just consumers affected.
In the first outage, the outage which I posted during, only consumers were affected - EMEA only - however, the second outage affected more services as they I guess replaced the core switch (meaning the US was then affected and BES connections back to hub).

So, in the context of the original failure, yes, should have BES is a valid point, in the subsequent failure, then nothing could have prevented it.

You know i find all this a bit odd

I have a BB and have had NO issues at all. Still getting everyting my full service. And my friends that have and its not been that many, are now just getting repeat messages or loads through at a time.

The thing i keep thinking is the timeing of all this and the lack of info from RIM

Industrial sabotage at play here???

They cant be seen to either not know whats been going on, or admit to a security breach as that would seem to be bad.

Are there any major launches of other product being planned for the next few weeks????

A bit of bad press at the right time can do wonders........

mmmm

Nobody would even consider doing that and RIM would instantly own up to it being that.

iOS5 was released yesterday, and iPhone 4S is coming tomorrow.

Is your Blackberry a company provided handset? If so, its likely to be running through a BES, or not managed by Slough.
