Alesha gives higher marks to showbiz people
workshylady
10-10-2011
Watching Saturday nights show, my Dad announced that he thinks Alesha gives 'showbiz' people (actors, singers etc) higher marks than those from other fields - sports, politics etc. Does anyone have any stats that would prove this either way? I wouldn't mind doing the analysis myself, but need to know what marks she has given out along the way (maybe alongside the average that each contestant scored as a comparator).

Maybe actors in general have an advantage over other dancers, with their stage experience, being able to use their expression more and'act' their way through a dance (with the exception of Patsy )

Impossible to compare this series as only four of the fourteen are not "showbiz" professionals and three of these are perhaps the weakest dancers in the competition (Edwina, Nancy and Audley).

So tell your dad that this series they all give lower marks to non-showbiz people because they are rubbish!

If you are talking historically, I did an excercise (I can't find it now but someone might have it) that proved that Alesha's marks are not significantly higher than anyone elses (except Craig) so if she does this, then the others do as well.

A bit of analysis from the weekend for you.

Alesha gave joint top marks to "non-showbiz" people for five of their first eight dances. Exceptions were Nancy's waltz (3 compared to 4 from Len and Bruno), Robbie's Foxtrot (7 compared to Len's 8) and Nancy's Salsa (2 was the lowest mark.)

So the answer to the original question is not compared to the other judges. I don't know why your Dad would think it's just Alesha

And whilst I'm here in the spreadsheets...

Series 8 only had three non-showbizzers (Peter Shilton, Gavin Henson and Ann Widdecombe). Alesha marked...

Peter Shilton - top or joint top marks for all four dances (4/4)
Anne Widdecombe - top or joint top 6/10 (mainly down to Len's "overmarking" - he was 10/10 for her)
Gavin Henson - top or joint top 10/12

I hope this answers your Dad's question

It's tricky to emote when you're 95% botox though.

If you don't mind doing the analysis yourself, Ultimate Strictly is the website for all the raw data you will need.

And while you're about it, perhaps you could prove or disprove the theory that Len overmarks sportsmen...

Not always. Not if you're "airy fairy".
(Has angry flashback. Spits out teeth. Sticks pins into Len voodoo doll. Throws darts at picture of "blokey" Darren Gough. Takes deep breath. Feels marginally better.)

Well she didn't mark the glamorous and elegant showbiz Alex Jones high. In fact instead of her more usual higher marking than the other judges, she gave her a 7, as opposed to Bruno and Len who gave her an 8 each. Craig being Craig, gave a 6.

True... it's probably jealousy as she usually climbs right up on her high horse to talk down to contestants ('you sure got the party started, wasn't you") after a crap dance,
I'd take it as a compliment if I was Alex.

Alesha has already, along with Bruno, admitted to overmarking contestants to compensate for what she feels is Craig's "undermarking".
