Hildegard Behrens as Brunnhilde
I am not sure if there are many classical or opera fans on here so I am wondering if anyone has heard Hildegard Behren's singing Brunnhilde in Wagner's Gotterdammerung.
The other day I managed to purchase a copy of Gotterdammerung from a shop in Berlin, buying online of course. It was recorded by the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1991, James Levine conducting. Although I have always been a great fan of the Solti/Culshaw version recorded by Decca in 1964, this version almost, but not quite matches it. Behrens is wonderful, although her voice is much lighter in tone than Nillsson and Gwyneth Jones who sang the part for Cheareu/Boulez in a later version recorded at Bayreuth. The recording by the way is outstanding and copies are becoming much rarer these days. All Wagnerians should have a copy, so if you haven't, grab one while you can. Sadly, Behrens died whilst touring Japan a couple of years ago. So, this recording is a testament to her fine talents. |
