The thing about The Bill was that even when it first went twice a week, the show was always about dealing with crime. You never saw it from the criminal's viewpoint and rarely saw the officer's private lives.

It was on twice a week like a soap but wasn't really like a soap back then. More like a half hour police drama. When it got more soapy it lost its edge for me. Losing great characters like Tosh Lines, Roach, Dashwood and Burnside didn't help either.
Fair point. The funny thing about The Bill between 1988 and 1998 was that it was scheduled like a soap (half-hour) but there weren't many continuous soapy stories. All the stories were self-contained and tight, and the quality was excellent. People will say that when Burnside left, The Bill started to go off the boil, but I don't think it was until early 1998 when the show started to become quite tired and stale, hence the revamp to hour-long twice weekly episodes. Ratings were dropping for the half-hour format to the point where it was only getting 11.3 million in winter 1997, the same figures that The Bill was getting in the summer of 1996 roughly.

The half-hour era is my favourite era of The Bill and I enjoy watching old eps on YouTube with Burnside et al as well as the ones without Burnside.

As regards to The X Factor USA, how is it doing in the USA?

For those of us old enough to remember Z Cars was probably the first police drama that dealt with the private lives of coppers - I remember there was one about a policeman assaulting his wife, cutting edge stuff at the time Even earlier we occasionally used to see PC Dixon (Dock Green) at home but it was usually an anodyne chat over a cuppa. How things have moved on.

Yes, things have moved on. Well I know Dixon of Dock Green was the police drama of the 50's and 60's, Z Cars was the police drama of the 60's and early 70's, The Sweeney was the police drama of the late 70's and The Bill was the police drama of the 80's, 90's and early noughties.

The question is, where will the new era of police drama begin seeing as The Bill has ended? Where is the ppolice drama of the 2010's?

CW's new dramas, The Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie received a back 9 episode order for a full season, alongside Ringer. The Secret Circle was expected, but was quite surprised at Hart of Dixie. I thought CW was going to wait a few weeks before making any decisions about Hart of Dixie.
It is very rare that The CW don't order a back 9 for their new fall dramas. The only one I can remember that they didn't was The Beautiful People but its entirely possible I'm forgetting something. Basically the fact that they have very little on the bench for midseason locks them into picking this stuff up.

Isnt FOX airing one or two episodes on Tuesdays in place of Glee, New Girl and Raising Hope, must be difficult as The X Factor has to finish by December. Series 2 should air in August or early September to get a head start,
Fox's schedule around this time of year is always difficult to keep track of because there are about 7 different versions of it. I think The X Factor is scheduled for Tuesday night for the rest of October. But ultimately this is the problem with airing a show like this in the Fall for Fox it will inevitably get preempted by baseball. There is however basically no chance that the show airs outside of the regular season I would have thought.

Apparently it is running as normal In Canada. Fox have provisionally announced that the missing episode will air Sunday but that could be delayed again if there is another Baseball game.
The scheduling is currently all over the place and this is really the worst time for viewers to be losing the show in the schedule.

Not forgetting No Hiding Place 1959-1967, and Softly, Softly 1966-1969.

Having Diane Sawyer really helped ABC News. ABC and NBC News are closing the gap now. Interesting to see how CBS news shows are not doing well, whereas most of their prime-time shows are winning timeslots and/or having high numbers.

Who was it last night?
Tracy Emin she of the unmade bed art displays. Wasn't interested. She looks like an unmade bed. Watched The Fades instead.

What's interesting about the evening news bulletins is that CBS used to always win with Walter Kronkite as host. Dan Rather took over and the success continued, then for some reason people started turning away. Not sure why.

I think Privileged was another show that didn't complete a 22 episode series. IIRC, they only made to 18.

Don't know why they would have picked Tracy Emin, she was bound to get low rarings, so what if she had afamily of petty criminals and an ancient gypsy family in her background it was hardly the most exciting of eps.

I see the BBC has succeded in driving the Xfactor back to 8oclock, ITV shouldn't have tried an earlier land grab so to speak in the first place..

I think WDYTYA is quite exposed on a Wednesday as it doesn't always get a great lead in and has strong competition. Would still do a job on BBC2 though.

And it's a common sense move by ITV to move The X Factor to 8pm. I'm tired of Strictly moving back so early that it's part of The Sign Zone.

Looks like the hour long Emmerdale dented Waterloo Road. ITV are doing a good job of keeping it in check this series after a run of 5 million + ratings last series. I don't think Waterloo Road will go any higher than 4.5m this series now, even without soap competition. Interesting times ahead with the Scotland move coming up.

ps: where are ITV getting all these extra soap episodes from?! There's another Corrie down on Wednesday at 19:30 in 2 weeks time according to digiguide.tv

Barely 5m for a brand new Midsomer Murders, in autumn, with an hour long EmFm lead in, and against BBC1 opposition attracting 3-4m viewers only?

Looks like it's running out of gas...

Waterloo Road is being damaged a lot this series by the random extra soap episodes. Emmerdale would probably have been over 7m without WR too, but WR is being damaged more down over 1m on last series. It doesn't help that the quality is awful-nothing is going on, the new child actors are awful & the new teachers are bland. I reckon we'll be seeing the end of Waterloo Road come the end of next year when the Scottish show begins.

Decent for Midsomer & Soho Blues performed a bit better after flopping on Mondays.

Difficult night for BBC One, with Emmerdale obviously throwing a spanner in the works for Waterloo Road. Wednesdays are turning into a bit of a problem once again - when Waterloo Road struggles, they're left with an awkward slot at 8.30 and an abandoned old staple fading at 9pm. This is why I'm not holding out too much hope for Frozen Planet, to be honest. It just doesn't have the support in the schedule. It might muster a decent opening sample from all the publicity, but the viewers will fade away over 7 weeks.

Channel 4's property double is about the only thing working really well for the channel just at the moment, and has offered them some welcome relief in the middle of the week. But Fresh Meat has still found the going tough - they just can't seem to get a scripted show to cut through.

It is when you strip out the repeat showing on another channel an hour later which has been aggregated into the figure reported above...

I notice ITV are creeping up the number of soap episodes per week - Corrie has another 6 episode week coming up ... god help us if they permanently up the soaps any more.
