Any ratings for "the Fades" last night on BBC3. It's getting to be rather good so I'm hoping it's getting enough to warrant a renewal!

It is when you strip out the repeat showing on another channel an hour later which has been aggregated into the figure reported above...
Of course the real issue is that BBC1's big dinosaur epic is facing extinction faster than a scaly reptile in the way of a large chunk of space rock 2.86m a bit of reverse evolution from the days of Walking With Dinosaurs

What's interesting about the evening news bulletins is that CBS used to always win with Walter Kronkite as host. Dan Rather took over and the success continued, then for some reason people started turning away. Not sure why.

Wow does Waterloo Road only get less than 4 million viewers? that is awful for a primetime show. I am surprised it hasn't been axed.

Don't know if this is true but Wiki says the Official X Factor Judges House episode was 13.32m? if that is true that's a fantastic rating

I notice ITV are creeping up the number of soap episodes per week - Corrie has another 6 episode week coming up ... god help us if they permanently up the soaps any more.

The Cronkite years (1962-1981) marked the heyday of CBS News and the evening newscasts. There were only three networks in those days. When Cronkite signed-off for the last time on March 6, 1981, his remarks were carried live by ABC and NBC on their newscasts as well as CBS, the only time this has ever happened on US televison. The term ''anchorman'' was reputedly invented for Cronkite. After his death Brian Williams of NBC wrote for Time magazine ''He was the best there ever was.''

Cronkite was the gold standard. But having said all of this CBS News is now last among the big three. It used to be first. What happened?

The only really interesting thing about the Press Office Week 44 is The Case a courtroom drama thats in the Afternoons after Doctors. Also Death In Paradise is on Tuesdays at 9 (taking over from the Body Farm) and the Slap is on thursdays on BBC4. Also there is a new series of Him and Her on BBC 3.

Dan Rather happened. Plus NBC and ABC beefed up their newscasts. Plus the overall audience became much more fragmented (as has been the case in the UK). Plus the nation did not feel the need to come together at 6.30 pm every night. As Brian Williams also wrote :''During the family dinner hour more often than not it was the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite...he explained our world each night''

Indeed the audience did not take to Dan Rather at all and CBS has never really been able to win them back round since. It still amazes me that they stuck with Rather for as long as they did. I suppose that's a reminder of just how much the industry has changed in recent times. As things stand I don't imagine CBS will ever make much substantial growth. 24 hour cable news makes the evening news an increasingly difficult sell.

Except both NBC and ABC network news audiences up on the same week last year (my post #33)
Get back to me when the evening news is growing by 12%+ (more than double what ABC and NBC saw for the week) and then we can talk about whether CBS can expect to significantly grow its audience. But even then for CBS it would need to be closer to 20% growth for it to be significant. And in general for the news when we're talking relatively minor growth (or loss) its always best to look at what's been happening in the world and whether it would make more people inclined to watch a news broadcast. |

Someone asked about Jeremy Kyles US show earlier in the week. I have some figures now.
For the week of September 23 The Jeremy Kyle show finished at #124 in the weekly syndicated rankings with a 0.5 (household) rating. To put that into some context for you some selected highlights of other shows in the rankings Judge Judy [#1] 6.7 Dr. Phil [#15] 3.0 Dr. Oz [#16] 2.9 Maury [#28] 2.3 Anderson [#66] 1.3 |

That seems a waste. Sounds like perfect Sunday night material - couldn't they have waited until Downwards Abbey finished its run?
It sounds like the BBC will be sending in Garrow's Law again to do its usual business against all of that - and have decided to keep their bigger autumn swings (Frozen Planet, Death in Paradise) well clear. Not a bad idea, all said and done. EDIT: Something else I've wondered about: Birdsong (2x90) was on the autumn/winter BBC One trail and I'd have thought they might want to air that around Remembrance Sunday in November given the subject matter. That depends on it being ready in time, of course - but if it were they could jump in the week after Downton and try and snap up the period drama crowd who desert ITV once the rather less refined IAC shows up. |

Difficult night for BBC One, with Emmerdale obviously throwing a spanner in the works for Waterloo Road. Wednesdays are turning into a bit of a problem once again - when Waterloo Road struggles, they're left with an awkward slot at 8.30 and an abandoned old staple fading at 9pm. This is why I'm not holding out too much hope for Frozen Planet, to be honest. It just doesn't have the support in the schedule. It might muster a decent opening sample from all the publicity, but the viewers will fade away over 7 weeks.
Channel 4's property double is about the only thing working really well for the channel just at the moment, and has offered them some welcome relief in the middle of the week. But Fresh Meat has still found the going tough - they just can't seem to get a scripted show to cut through. |
