I'm certain it's because C4 only have FTA rights to The Simpsons and Sky have the multichannel rights. And it would look a bit hopeless anyway, going up against newer episodes on Sky One. I think it was a waste of money buying The Cleveland Show, it just emphasises the fact they don't have Family Guy, but they do have a show almost exactly the same but not as good.

Maybe, but how would you work out a 50/50 split, because then there'd be endless discussions about how you'd do the split with all the other home nations quick to jump on accusations of bias towards England. We know what a disaster it was when England signed up with Sky in 1998, it almost led to the entire competition being abandoned.
One thing the 50/50 F1 split pointed out was that the argument about test cricket being on Sky is that if they didn't have it exclusively they wouldn't want it at all, then they're happy to share the F1.

I don't think Sky want athletics - it's the one major sport they don't really show any interest in. They used to have Diamond League but it always performed badly for them so they dropped it. Reason is it is mainly a casual viewing audience - it has almost no hardcore fans so will not drive subs (in contrast to F1).”
That's true, and the other bonus of buying F1 is that, judging by the complaints about it, many F1 fans don't seem to have an interest in any other sport, given the number of people who are saying they don't have Sky Sports and don't want to subscribe just for the F1. With most other sports there seems to be more of a crossover between fans of other sports.
MOTD is vitally important for the Beeb as it gives them content virtually every week of the season, and lots of it as well.

In Will Wyatt's book he said the only one they could have done something about in that period was the cricket, because they could and should have found the money to hold on to it but they got complacent. The rest he reckons would have gone anyway as their rivals were offering far too much money.
