Baring in mind that Wednesday used to be BBC1s flopzone, they will be delighted with how much Wednesdays have stabilised. No way they will get rid of Waterloo Road as long as it stays above 3m.

Paul Merton debuted solidly, it should hold up against Frozen Planet. Channel 5 should be pleased that Dangerous Driving School cracked 1m as well.

Yeah, and it happens or has happened with 10 to 13-episode sitcom and dramas series over here. I'm thinking of 1990s series such as Lovejoy, Birds of a Feather, Goodnight Sweetheart and more recent stuff such as My Family. I loved all those series, but they all had their share of embarrassingly bad episodes, in my opinion, because of the quantities of episodes being churned out each year.

Yeah, I was just registering my surprise that we don't see far more team writing, really (I realise my post sounded irritated about it. I wasn't - it was just 3am ) and just speculating as to why that's so.

I'm not saying that "authored" drama or comedy is a bad thing in any way - you wouldn't want dumb TV execs wading in and telling Iannucci to get a team together and turn out 13 episodes of The Thick Of It. I'm just intrigued that it's so dominant in our TV market, and more shows aren't commissioned with a show runner type model in mind. I'm not sure whether it comes from the writers themselves or the commissioners, but there seems a bit of an attitude about "farming stuff out" that assumes it must mark the creative death of a series or will ruin it's popularity. When recent examples (in drama, less so in British comedy) don't seem to bear that out at all.

We keep being told how important international sales are - and longer runs (in one way or another) is surely something the likes of ITV are going to have to embrace if they're to exploit that market properly. Paul Abbott seems to want to go all-out for it - and while Shameless isn't the greatest example, having been pushed too far at too great an age, I think the industry might need to start listening to him a little more in the future.

You used to have shows like Casualty running for 26 weeks of the year and easily getting 13 million + for its twelfth series in autumn 1997. Even as late as 2000-2001, Holby City was only running for 30 episodes a year.

London's Burning was doing 16-18 episodes easily and with good ratings of around 9/10 million in 2001.

We have to hope the BBC learn from ITV's mistake of retooling The Bill and then having that fail miserably. Waterloo Road doesn't need a big revamp, it needs stability.

It is, but I feel moving it to Scotland will be one step too far.

I agree, however the general point that the show is well used to new characters coming in, should help it.

Starting to see some of the new series coming to the UK, this is good news

Yeah, looks like The Mentalist is returning to Thursdays which I'm pleased about. Not sure how they're going to fit it around the 7 Europa League match days in 2012 though. I guess it will take a break at some point during the run, will probably need to anyway.

No film premieres once again. Titles include: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Open Season (2006) and Edison (2005).

US Ratings Wednesday October 19

Fox is set to win the night with the first game of the World Series it averaged a 3.9 across primetime last night. That's down from the first game last year but expect some upward adjustment in the finals later today.

Elsewhere ABC's Modern Family once again led the night. It was down a few tenths from last week but it'll still be comfortably bigger than everything other than football this week. At 10PM Revenge was also down vs. last week but that's like baseball related. CBS had a mostly upward night with Survivor and Criminal minds both up week-on-week and CSI even.

Over on NBC the only thing to fall was a repeat of Whitney everything else is even with last week. There's good news in that I suppose. And Up All Night at least continues to be something of a success all things considered.

Think New Girl is also premiering in November, wish that Channel 4 could move to it to the main channel and pair it either with 2 Broke Girls or a British comedy.

I think if Channel 4 want to establish 2BG, it needs to be on Fridays either at 9pm or after a show like MPD or Derren Brown.

It's going to look a bit ridiculous as the Scottish education system is significantly different from the English one. They can't physically move the school - it's actually in Rochdale and logically should come under BBC North (although they don't seem to do drama). Is this not just a BBC admin move ?
