Another worrying night for ABC.
Grey's Anatomy now looks unlikely to stay above a 3 for the rest of the season which would be a disaster for ABC. With the casting issues they're facing for next season they should consider calling it a day although they won't instead it'll continue on for another year with dwindling interest dragging the rest of the schedule down with it. At the very least they should pull the plug on Private Practice this season and maybe move Grey's to 10PM next year. Over on CBS The Big Bang Theory got a nice bump. I wonder if that's a syndication bump or whether its down to the lack of X Factor and (bizarrely) NBC being in repeats. Regardless Rules felt the benefit of the big lead-in. Person of Interest continues to disappoint in that 9PM slot. This was supposed to be CBS' big new drama and its barely above Unforgettable a show that had considerably less promotion and airs in an hour with lower PUT. Something has to change midseason. NBC I assume went into repeats to try and avoid the World Series. Makes sense for them at this point. |

I'm surprised the CSIs and NCIS aren't in HD whereas other US imports like The Mentalist and The Walking Dead but again that may be due to rights and cost.

It's a bit embarrassing that a show about the very latest trends in tech, often reviewing high definition equipment, is not yet transmitted in HD itself. |

Rules of Engagement did very well for CBS, I expect if ratings hold, it'll get another season even though it will have reached syndication numbers by the end of the season with 96 episodes. |

Channel 5 have submitted a formal application to Ofcom for the proposed fifth HD slot on Freeview:
http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/bin...rd/ITA3-c5.pdf If successful, the new service will launch in spring / early summer 2012. There were no other applicants. Lots of interesting stuff in the document, but one thing that I know many viewers will be pleased about is that both CSI: Vegas and NCIS will be in HD from next year. And a cool ratings related statistic I spotted: I'd rather E4 HD or Film4 HD got it myself - and personally E4 HD as at least unlike C5 they are producing home grown HD drama. Quote:
call me stupid I always assumed that channel 53 on my HD telly was reserved for Channel 5 HD
didn't realise it was out to tender, anyway it'll be nice to have that space filled (assuming it will be 53) |

ABC:
8pm - Charlie's Angels - 5.63m (1.2) * Cancelled last week 9pm - Grey's Anatomy - 9.36m (3.5) * Down 10% from last year * #1 drama of the night in Adults 18-49 10pm - Private Practice - 6.56m (2.4) * Down 14% from last year CBS: 8pm - The Big Bang Theory - 14.69m (4.9) * Up 13% from last week * Ties season high * Up 23% from same night last year * #1 show of the night in viewers and adults 18-49 8.30pm - Rules of Engagement - 11.47m (3.7) * Best premiere since 2007 * Ties TBBT repeat rating last week * Up 19% on Sh*t My Dad Says last year 9pm - Person of Interest - 12.27m (2.7) * Stronger lead-in helping it to stabilise? * Down 18% from CSI last year 10pm - The Mentalist - 12.50m (2.5) * Down 14% from last year * #1 drama of the night in total viewers FOX: 8pm - World Series - 12.91m (3.7) * Subject to significant revision NBC: Repeats CW: 8pm - The Vampire Diaries - 2.85m (1.3) * W18-34 - 1.9 9pm - The Secret Circle - 2.11m (0.9) * W18-34 - 1.2 Tvbythenumbers CBS has really made a comeback with Rules of Engagement. They will be filling syndication numbers with people actually watching the show now. This is just the beginning though. We will see how those numbers shape up in coming weeks. Has CBS learned their lesson? Or, will CBS try to "liven up" Saturday again? CW's Thursday night schedule did decently well. Perhaps the only two shows which their PR office can boast about (and not get slated for being the network boss' "baby" like Gossip Girl), since there are more ABC Family hit shows than there are for The CW. |

I suspect tonight's Big Brother might have it's best rating tonight for eviction. I've not seen the BB forum flood like that at all this year.

It also signifies egg on the face of the producers after their naughty behaviour earlier in the week. They won't be trying funny business like that again in a hurry! People who say the eviction shows are no longer worth watching because they are too predictable couldn't be more wrong. Moments like THAT make it well worth tuning in. And the series of announcements in order of popularity make it more compelling than ever before. |

It was a brilliant surprise result that will no doubt ensure another bumper rating for the 11pm show.

I think ABC should give Private Practice a final 13 episodes next season at 8pm, followed by the final series of Greys at 9 and a new show at 10.

The BBC have commissioned a new studio sitcom for BBC One - Citizen Khan, to be shown in Autumn 2012. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pre.../21/khan.shtml
Is that it for BBC1? The channel that once was home to the most legendary sitcoms the world has ever seen?

Well, that sounds like a "been there and done it before", "let's not forget the minority communities and not trot out another white middle class comedy" flop. I don't think we need to wait till autumn next year to work that one out. Indeed, there are "Mr Khan" clips on the BBC comedy website. Don't worry if you can't be arsed checking it out - you ain't missing anything...

I wonder whether they might try that at mid-season, actually. They surely need to clear some space behind Grey's anyway in order to launch on of their midseason dramas (most obviously, Shonda Rhimes' Scandal). If PP holds together at 8 then it might get one last run (and temporarily patch up one of the worst slots on the ABC schedule). If it doesn't, then they can cancel it having lost very little.
I do hope that PP gets another series, it is a great show. |

I read in the papers today that the Downton Abbey Christmas special is set on Boxing Day. That might give an indication to ITV's planned scheduling.
Meanwhile, the front page of today's Daily Mirror gives an indication of where its priorities lie. "Gaddafi: The Last Words" gets half the space of "Cowell: I'll AXe You All" which gets half the space of "Free Peppa Pig Toy" And the X Factor story (about Cowell supposedly ranting at the judges as ratings plummet:yawn::yawn fuels my belief (only said partly tongue-in-cheek) that the X Factor In Crisis stories are coming from the X Factor in a cunning bid to try and boost their ratings.

Boxing Day would certainly be a sensible move on ITV's part -out of the firing line of BBC1's Christmas Day big guns, but still on a day when there'll be a huge potential audience tuning in.

Yep.
Sunday the 11th after the TXF Final. ![]() (or the 18th) The 18th is definitely a possibility but I think they might just go with Xmas Day or Boxing Day. Boxing Day makes most sense there because ITV have done quite well on Boxing Day over the last couple of years as they've actually made a bit of an effort. Plus it'd muck up Great Expectations on BBC1, as I'm sure they're planning to replicate the Upstairs Downstairs scheduling of last year, so either it's first episode would be dented significantly or it'd have to be shifted a day later and BBC1 would need to find something else for Boxing Day. |
