Big Brother's sudden rise is noteworthy. A wonderful surprise for me on my lunch break.

I was skeptical about the noms twist but those ratings are great. And it did make for compelling television.

They're not! It's good for this series granted, but that says more about how disappointing the series has rated.

The sudden rised rating of BB came out of nowhere! It was the highest watched HL show of the series.

I'm hoping the higher ratings don't mean it was because the twist was good.... because it was far from. It was a travesty actually.

Re High Stakes. If we take the ITV2 repeats into account are more people watching Jeremy Kyle in daytime than in primetime?

Oh dear for High Stakes. Surely ITV have to pull this immediately? Good to see EastEnders edging closer to 9 million to Tuesdays. Excellent performance for BB (relative of course).

Just comparing how The Voice US and The X Factor US have done ratings-wise (Live+SD final ratings):

The Voice (NBC) averaged 11.5 million viewers and a 4.5 A18-49 rating for its first season. So far, The X Factor (FOX) has also averaged 11.5 million viewers but a lower 4.0 A18-49 rating.

The A18-49 rating is what really matters, not the no. of viewers. The Voice (50% of audience 18-49s) skewed younger than The X Factor (45% in 18-49s) has done so far in the US . Worth noting, The Voice aired on NBC which is a channel that usually has lower ratings than FOX so to match the 11.5m is impressive relatively speaking. Having said that, The Voice did have an America's Got Talent lead-in for some of its episodes which would've helped it, whereas The X Factor hasn't had that kind of lead-in support.

It'll be interesting to see if XFUS numbers pick up for the live shows like what normally happens over here or if they go down. If they go up or if there is a shift to a younger audience demographic skew for the live shows, it has a small chance of ending up with a higher 18-49 season average than The Voice. But even if that happens, looking at how much the ad spots were going for pre-series, it still would've performed below those pre-series expectations. But still definitely a renewal for next year and potential to grow in its 2nd season if it follows a similar trend to what happened in the UK and Australia.

About the same I think. He usually gets ~1.4m in the mornings and ~0.6m in the afternoons on ITV2. I think ITV2 show an extra episode in the afternoons too so if you add that in he is watched by more viewers in daytime. Pretty embarrassing for him, but for ITV High Stakes is just the latest in a string of light entertainment disasters this year.

High Stakes can join Outcasts, Big Brother, Show Me the Funny, Celebrity Wish List and The Marriage Ref as appalling flops of this year so far. :yawn:

You have forgotten about Don't Scare the Hare.

This is a bit of a tricky comparison to make.

It is, for example, worth remembering that The Voice played out its final episodes of season one in the summer when television viewing traditionally dips. And as you note the relative success (or lack thereof) of each network as a whole weights the numbers a little as well. As does the game of expectations.

I think regardless of whether The X Factor finishes ahead of The Voice the general press tone will be incredibly positive for The Voice and at best leaning toward negative for The X Factor. Primarily because of what was expected. It cannot be overstated just how dramatically The Voice over performed. Absolutely nobody (not even NBC) were expecting it to launch as big as it did and then finish with a 4+ average for the season. NBC's general amazement about how successful the show was, was scarily obvious at the up fronts this year.

In contrast to that The X Factor US has really under performed what was expected of it. Unless it grows a huge amount by the final I doubt its going to have much in the way of overly positive coverage in terms of its overall performance.

Having said that I think the real concern for Fox now has got to be season two of The Voice. If that's up year-on-year (and all things considered it should be) then these X Factor comparisons are going to get even more uncomfortable for them.

The Voice did NBC a huge favour with it's great 18-49 demo scores, but like The X Factor US it wasn't getting Idol sized audiences. With a plum post SuperBowl spot it'll be interesting to see if it will get momentum & become bigger in series 2.

Movie Premiere: Pineapple Express (2008)
Comedy. A hapless stoner witnesses a murder and goes on the run with his dealer when he realises he has accidentally dropped incriminating evidence at the crime scene. IMDB Score: 7/10.

Movie Premiere: Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009)
Animated sequel based on the fairy character from JM Barrie’s timeless classic Peter Pan. Tinker Bell is chosen to create an autumn sceptre to commemorate the blue harvest moon. She is entrusted with the fragile blue moonstone to help with her task but, when her friend Terence also offers to help, the moonstone is accidentally shattered. The only way to fix it is to embark on a perilous journey to find the magical Mirror of Incanta. IMDB Score: 6.6/10.

Movie Highlight: Mulan (1998)
Disney animated adventure based on a classic Chinese folktale. When invaders threaten China, a young woman poses as a man to take her ailing father’s place in the army being trained to defend the country. The feisty young woman is accompanied by a magical dragon who helps her in her quest. IMDB Score: 7.2/10

Very solid night for both BBC terrestrials. The pre-watershed schedule on BBC One is always rock solid, so provided the best possible support for Death in Paradise, which started well. Just got to sit back and see how far it falls next week now - could easily go either way, I think.

BBC Two will be very happy with their performance, too. They've made some big strides on Tuesdays this year, capitalising on the poor ITV opposition. Man Lab did much better than I was expecting as last year's series quickly fell sub-2m, even in the officials. I wondered why they'd really brought it back - but it seems to be working so far. And it set up a good performance for the Bletchley Park doc as well, which is nice to see.

C5 will be the only other terrestrial emerging with much to celebrate from last night - with BB's surprising resurgence. Still very poor based on the expectations we held for the series a few months ago, of course - but it might provide them with a bit of a bounce as they consider how to re-tool for next year.

Otherwise, Channel 4 under performed again with a high profile, but ageing line-up. If you'd have told them three or four years ago that a night of Gok Wan, Jamie Oliver and Shameless would see nothing crack 2m (excl. +1) then I think they'd have laughed. And speaking of laughing, shame about Jeremy Kyle's new show, isn't it...

Good for Death in Paradise, and James Mays Man Lab returns well for its 2nd season. I think the BBC should use James May more he easily the most likeable of the Top Gear team.

I've been meaning to reply to this. You are right, it's all about realistic expectations.The thing is because of the money and talent potentially involved in the coaching side, plus the fact it's been a big hit in other countries. If it isn't a big hit the press will have a field day.

I think for its sake, Danny Cohen, the light entertainment department it will have to be a massive to stop negative criticism of the amount paid to secure it. Comparisons with The X Factor are inevitable that will be true of ratings too. There's not much they can do as pretty much every show's ratings are compared to The X Factor at some point.

What expectations were they? I think if it was getting 1.6-2.0m a night they'd be very happy with that actually given the age profile it has. It was never going to keep hold of the 2m+ figures we saw during CBB with the possible exception of eviction nights.

I believe you and Gary may be talking about two different sets of episodes which only highlights how confusing the E4 scheduling of the show is.

Unless I'm mistaken he's talking about the episodes that are airing now and you're talking about the episodes that start next week and that E4 is currently promoting.
