I'm not saying it's fine what i am trying to point out is that some people think it's going to be down next week to as it's bonfire night but looking at the 2009 week 3 had 11.58m but week 4 was about 1m down. But then the next week was up again.

In 2009 Halloween was on the actual Saturday, which coincided with significant drop in ratings (by far the lowest live show overnight rating of that series), the following night it was back up to a 13.9m overnight average for the results, which I'm pretty sure ain't gonna happen tonight. 2009 Bonfire night was a Thursday. This year Halloween is Monday and Bonfire night is on a Saturday. I'm pretty sure X-Factor will not rise next week and could even see another drop; Strictly I expect to remain level, or see a small drop but not as much as X-Factor.

True. But next week their is no clash at all so there is no excuse for it to be down again even if it is bonfire night.

Tonight does have better guest singers that might get more people to tune in though?

There was a drop for The X Factor last year but it was still ahead of Strictly wasn't it? Had a look at last year's overnights and The X Factor had 12.2m while Strictly had around 10.4m. So both down. Strictly slightly and The X Factor hugely. The X Factor was doing well this year before the live shows.Must be down to the talent.

Last week for the Sunday show it had 11.12m (39.8%) with 163k (0.6%) on +1, which I think it could match tonight. I think the return of The Cube at 7pm should prevent X-Factor dropping compared to last week, but that will still make it down 20% year-on-year.

Also last year week 4 got 11.55m and the week after got 12.2m history suggests X Factor should be higher next week even if it is bonfire night.

If it is down it has a huge problem IMO

HIGNFY was usually at 10pm but for its last two years on BBC2, in 1999 and 2000, it was on at 9pm. And it would have had some awful lead-ins at 10pm as well, some Friday night comedies in the nineties were right stinkers (Sunnyside Farm? All Rise For Julian Clary? The Fall Guy?).

I do remember when I attended a seminar at the Edinburgh TV Festival in 1997, when Mark Thompson was being interviewed as controller of BBC2, he said that Gardeners World into Shooting Stars at 9pm on Fridays seemed a demented combination, but in fact quite a lot of the audience watched both.


That's because Walliams' Sky show was crap, it was just a dull version of 8 Out Of 10 Cats, which Walliams is always on anyway.

There was no drop in the full slot overnights for Halloween X-Factor (Sunday) or Bonfire night X-Factor (Friday) last year.

The cube didn't do very well on it's last run did it.

But the clash is less than it was in previous weeks and the show is STILL down week on week.
The clash only causes a very small drop in the average when looked at across the night.

Unfortunately Doctor Who isn't on so we don't have the entire night broke down per second just to batter trolls with

Anyway - Strictly is managing very well WITH the clash - it'll probs be even higher if X Factor moves away - and X Factor overall unaffected.


I have to say going into the live shows I did predict 'not much growth' - as frankly there was no sign of any real excitement. The fall week on week is actually rather significant. It could hit low 9's or even...8's!

The differences are that Secret Fortune aired at 8pm not 6pm, mostly had a 5.5-6m lead in from Doctor Who and had already had one primetime run when it got 5-6m to help it build a core primetime audience. The Chase has a core audience of 2m at 5pm so for it to get nearly 4m only an hour later with a rubbish lead in and partly against SCD on its first ever 'primetime' (if we can call 6pm primetime) outing is pretty good for them.


The Cube averaged c4m in the Sunday 7pm slot in the Spring, but that was in much better weather and without any other entertainment shows around it. It was getting 5-6m last year on Sundays at 7pm and it should get c5m tonight.

Anybody got any ratings for last night's repeat of Still-Not-Making-An-Impression Show?

The words in bold are interesting because looking at the audience appreciation scores for The X Factor they are down on what they used to be. They used to be in the 80s and are now in the 70s. Suggesting people aren't enjoying the show as much as they used to.

And I've said before Strictly's staging of the show is better than The X Factor. The fact that a programme from Studio 1 at BBC TV Centre looks better than something from Fountain Studios says it all.

Now if they get the Wembley and Blackpool shows to look amazing too it could be the best run of Strictly ever.

I suppose it's too much to hope that both Strictly and X Factor begin to fade and die away. Surely there should be something better on the 2 main channels than desperate unknown singer wannabees and desperate celebrity(?) dancer wannabees.

But I can dream.

Although with Wembley bigger doesn't always mean better when it comes to a show coming across well on screen - so when both shows move into Wembley for the weekend they need to ensure the action doesn't get lost in the space.

And apologies if this has been mentioned but I see two days after the I'm a Celeb launch it's bumped out of the schedules to make way for an England friendly.

And I wonder if the BBC will roll over with an Antiques Roadshow repeat at 8pm, or keep the new series running instead.

It's a shame GeorgeS doesn't post on Sundays anymore.

I think The X Factor will be down again next Saturday, going into the mid 9ms. That has to be it though; it can afford to be down once more but it'll need to recover on 12th November; or at the very least stabilise. I fully expected it to dip again last night, though the loss was minimal (only 180,000 on last week) so for anyone clutching at straws...there it is.

ITV has to forget about beating Strictly Come Dancing this year and focus on The X Factor still being the strongest commercial programme (specifically demo wise) currently on the box; with a lack of alternative the advertisers will still be interested in buying slots...just for a lesser price.

Strictly Come Dancing was also down on last year, though by a lesser amount. If Russell has to pull out with injury - he's having a minor operation today - I think the show may have a slight issue as it seems to be lacking some sparkle compared to last year; very much like The X Factor for many, though I'm prefering it (my opinion does differ bizarrely compared to everyone else's!)

I agree with those saying BBC One's schedule is much better that ITV1's in it's entireity; Merlin and Casualty offer a solid base in comparison to a weakened TV Burp (possibly due to a lower lead out?) and Piers Morgan - though Morgan did reasonably well. Take Strictly out of the schedule and BBC One would still have a reasonable night. Take The X Factor out of the schedule, despite it's current problems, and ITV1's night would fall flat.

I wonder, would it be a good idea to move the programme over to ITV2 on a night like that, with major promotion?
It would surely get very good ratings - although STV & UTV might be unhappy with the temporary move.

He's having to work overtime at the ITV press centre...apparently, some sort of mini-crisis???

Not until DSO is complete. Even then I doubt they would. It's not like BBC1 and 2.

I dunno, I don't think Russell, and indeed Nancy, are dominating procedings in the same way as Widdicome did last year. I was a bit underwhelmed by the casting this year when it was announced but I think it's been quite good, nobody seems to be running away with it and it's been tough to predict the results, and everyone seems very likeable which isn't always the case.


If you were to do that, though, you may as well do it on ITV1 at 10.30. It's a bit like when they used to premiere Corrie on ITV2 on Champions League nights a decade ago when they'd show it on ITV2 at 7.30 and ITV1 at 9.45.

One other problem then though is that it would hit ITV1's ratings.
