I was just looking up something at mysupermarket and was surprised to see how many products he's now got his name to

He's the HR Heinz of West Indian food, his name will live on long after he will.
I recommend the chilli beef with seasoned rice, it's the only chilli-type thing on the market I don't have to add hot sauce to. |

I'vew only ever tried one product. That was the BBQ sauce. There's now several varieties of it.
I'm tempted to give the Ginger Beer with Honey & Lime a try. |

I tried his Jerk/BBQ sauce. I was not impressed. Supposed to contain Scotch Bonnet chillis but you'd never know. I threw the rest of the bottle away.

I got one of his products back home. It was a sauce, can't remember what variety. I was taken with how watery it was. Sauce, I'd thought, is at least to have some thickness to it. It was like pouring water on my dinner.

He is every where. He's done curry sauces, tomato ketchup sauces, chicken currys, a lot of stuff with Birds Eye as well.
He's made a fortune. |

Fair play to him, one of the best marketed products in years considering he had nothing unique at all when he went in the Den.

He's been well marketed by shrewd businessmen. There's nothing particularly special about his products, IMO, there's plenty out there of better quality. That said, I do like to use his original Reggae Reggae Sauce on chicken thighs and drumsticks as a marinade when I can't be bothered to make my own.

I don't rate his sauces. Prefer the Nandos sauces for Peri Peri or look in the 'World Foods' section of your supermarket and try one of the other West Indian ranges, like Encona.

Had some of the Reggae Reggae crisps earlier.
They crisps themselves are nice. A good thickness and texture. They are just rebranded Burts http://www.burtschips.com/ The flavour was like weak and slightly spiced roast chicken. I wonder if they're supposed to be jerk chicken flavour ![]() I doubt i'd buy them again. I also have a pack of the chilli beef to try. |

I think with Levi Roots, his sauces and foods and so on need to appeal to a broader range of tastes, so they tend to be blander, and without as much spice.
I tend to stay away from them and go to my uncle for cooking advice. |

I made a caribbean curry with one of his sauce jars - the sauce was a bit watery and not really full of flavour. Nice enough, but it tasted exactly like what it was - a mass-produced consumer sauce.
All credit to him though, he's created (with a lot of help from whichever dragons invested) a marketing juggernaut. And at the end of the day, that will be all that matters to the businessman in him. |

covent garden soups seem to be dabbling in the current trend for everything Jamaican with their 'Jammin Jamaican' soup. I'm trying it as part of my lunch right now. Its basically sweet potato based with ginger, chile and coconut - not bad actually, its got a decent spicy kick

I really rate what Levi has achieved but I really don't like his Reggae Reggae sauce. Encona is beautiful. |

I normally buy my hot-sauces from the Hot-Headz website as I do like my spicy food. Although I always keep a bottle of Reggae Reggae Jerk/BBQ sauce in the cupboard for my cheese on toast and to mix into baked beans.
