Offtopic - TVs and 5.1 sound
This is a bit off topic but I don't know of another active forum where I could post this.
I have a TV at the moment which has Dolby Pro logic built in so I have 2 separate rear speakers. I'm after a new telly but the trend seems to be Virtual Dolby. My query is, can I plug in a 5.1 Home Cinema into the back of a TV and expect to get 5.1 sound out of it? Also is there anyway of turning the Home Cinema system on/off with the TV. Thanks Demus |

DD (Dolby Digital) 5.1 sound must come from a DD 5.1 source.
So this would not usually be your TV. Your DVD or your Sky+ would output 5.1 sound and these could be connected to a home cinema amp. My TV has built in DD 5.1 but I don't use it at all now. I now use an amp (with it's own speakers) that handles DD and DTS as well as DPL2 (Dolby ProLogic 2). In my experience TV with build in DD just don't have enough punch that you would get from a separate amp. If you are buying a new amp, DPL2 is a must as it makes non DD sound very DD ish.

digigriffin is correct. To get decent surround sound you need to get a proper amp and speakers. As for control I use a universal programmable remote that I have programmed to turn everything on and off with a single button push - if you visit www.remotecentral.com you can read up on the various models around.

Thanks Demus As for control you'd need to check if your remote is a learning model or if the 5.1 system's remote is learning. If you're looking for a TV with Dolby Pro Logic 2 then Comet sell the JVC 28R47SK which comes with rear speakers and a sub-woofer. I bought one in May this year and I'm very pleased with it.
