Can you buy it from a retail store or will there be no stock? I'm likely to order via Apple next week I doubt any shops would have any?

I doubt they've got any left for now as they were running out at the store I went to at 9am on the 14th!

My local CPW said they had plenty of the 32 and 64Gb models in stock, no so many of the 16Gb so I guess it depends what model u after.

It was the 16GBs that sold out within the hour at Westfield Stratford!

The white ones seem to be selling out a lot faster than the black ones, in case you were looking for them.

I'm after a 16GB one in black.

Just wondering if any stores would have any as it's a pain waiting 1/2 weeks from the Apple site.

You're with O2, IIRC?

O2's website has a stock checker for iPhone 4S availability at its shops:

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/stock/

Annoyingly, Apple doesn't have a retail store stock checker on its site. I think the last time it bothered with anything like that was for the 3GS.

Keep checking. It says it's updated several times each day.

You can only buy ob contract from O2. If he wants to buy one outright then you can only get them from Apple. That's what O2 told me before release anyway.

He's PAYG though. O2 are currently only offering the 4S to existing contract customers who are upgrading.

The manager of the store I got mine from said it would probably be around 2 to 3 weeks before they begin offering it on new contracts or on PAYG.

At this point I'd just order one from the online Apple store. You can always cancel the order if you manage to find one available locally in the mean time.

I walked into a local Phones4U and upgraded my o2 contract yesterday morning. They had plenty of stock in all sizes, both black and white.

Ah, fair enough

It's a shame the Apple website doesn't have a retail store stock checker like it did for the 3GS.

Quick question about O2 do they sell them sim free? I don't want to go to the store and be sold a contact can I buy one for £500 upfront?

As per my post above, O2 are currently only offering the 4S to existing contract customers who are upgrading. They are not yet offering it for PAYG.

Only the Apple retail stock are SIM free. Any supplied from a network will be locked.

So is there any hope of turning upto the Apple stores and getting one or am I limited to ordering online?

I'm sure I read yesterday that Apple are beginning to implement a reservation system in store, but that may be in the US. I'm guessing that means that people who want them and have their name down will get them first instead of casual walk-up customers.

Your best bet is to ring your nearest Apple store:

Apple's UK reserve and pick up page: http://reserve.apple.com/WebObjects/...aunch=MD235B_A

It says you have to reserve after 9pm for pick-up the next day but so far there hasn't been any stock to reserve.

I have been checking this "UK reserve and pick up page" daily and if it is correct then no store in the UK has had any stock of any model of iPhone 4S available since they launched the reserve and pickup page.

I have checked before 21.00 and after right through to midnight and sometimes after, I have cycled through the list of stores and nothing!

I don't believe that every store in the UK has not had any stock available for three days, I think that the website checker is probably just for a specific ring-fenced allocation.

I know from ringing my nearest store that stock was available, but was "for contract customers only"; I don't want a contract I just want to pay outright!

I am going to try the direct approach and walk in store.

I am an Apple shareholder and it is particularly galling to see the stock price drop because sales of iPhone missed targets last quarter, only to hear Tim Cook in the earnings conference call say that although sales of the iPhone 4S were breaking records and they have “no supply issues”.

I've seen loads for sale in Gum Tree between the retail price so is it worth buying from there?

Some are on Vodafone I guess there's no logos or branding anywhere on it? It can be unlocked for about £10 I guess?

Guess that's because they have no stock.

Mine was bought sim-free from Apple so I guess it's a case of could not rather than would not
