Guess that's because they have no stock.

Mine was bought sim-free from Apple so I guess it's a case of could not rather than would not
Ah no they checked and had ones in stock and a guy came down and said you can't buy one as they are keeping them for contact phones!

Was the 16GB one I wanted too so now have to order via Apple.com!

Just read this:

Seems they don't want to sell to PAYG.

Nope, that article is absolute rubbish.

Orange, Vodafone and Three are all offering the 4S on PAYG right now.

Why would the Apple shop not sell me one today then?

I'm actually O2 so it would be hopeless going to those networks as I would then need it unlocked.

They are operating a contract only policy for walk-in sales when available stocks are below a certain level.

For SIM free you will need to reserve online (which is not easy when stocks are low as you've already found out) or buy online and just suck up the 2 week wait.

(You'd already be half way through the wait time if you'd ordered online when I first suggested it...)

Yes I'm ordering online now.

The reason I held off was there was alot in the local ads and ebay but many were opened or not the right network.

I guess I will know better to order via Apple next time.
