So... Southampton uses 02380 but just lately i have been seeing numbers for Southampton starting with 02381 and at first i thought it was a typing error but it seems theres more of them popping up all the time. What is this 02381 i'm hearing of and where has it come from?

The area code is actually 023.

Its a common misconception in the cities/regions where the phone numbers were changed in 2000. What you've actually got is a 3 digit code and an 8 figure local number, i.e.

023 80xx xxxx

023 81xx xxxx

It was done exactly so that many more telephone numbers could be provided in those areas, and that's what's happening now with them starting to use the 81xx xxxx number range.

The same thing occurs in Cardiff and the other places listed in the link below - people who have always lived here were so used to their pre-2000 6 digit numbers that they continue to write their number as 02920 xxxxxx, whereas its actually 029 20xx xxxx, and as in Southampton we're now seeing numbers in the 21 range, i.e. 029 21xx xxxx.

The office in which I work now has an 020-3xxx-xxxx DDI numbering scheme.

It is quite unbelievable the amount of people there that think their number is 0203-xxx - Just where are these people from. . . .. Coventry? !
