Of course. I'm not trolling in that I believe what I said, but I did expect it to start a lively discussion - even the title which probably looks like something an Apple basher would say

I had a 'tech demo' of Siri from my fanboy friend over the weekend.

3 attempts to say "set reminder to call ____ on monday" - and it still didn't work.

I then had the pleasure of hearing "f*ck you, f*ck you, f*ck you" from him as he realised what a retard he looked and I subsequently fell about laughing.

After all there's still a lot the iphone can't or won't do, it's exactly the same as the previous model with the Siri software upgrade and a better CPU / GPU really. People have even hacked Siri to work on the iphone 4 and the 4S has only been out days.”

Errr most of the comments I've seen on this thread haven't been very constructive at all. Your input was "I spat coffee all over my keyboard". I don't mind people slating apple products as long as they are constructive. As an Apple user I can appreciate how good Android can be and I'm impressed by some of the devices, yet because I use apple products I'm still a "follower of fashion" or a "fanboy". I honestly see more bashing by Android users on these forums than by Apple users, or less constructive stuff anyway.

This is my thought too, the first week is a bit of a wow factor and then will it just be business as usual? It would be nice to see if the ipad 2 gets treated to Siri at any point, as there is no technical reason why it shouldn't and isn;t going to take away sales from the iphone 4S (i can understand from a business point of view why they haven't made it backwards compatible with the iphone 4).

I wouldn't know as I dont read Android threads as they aren't relevant to the phone that I purchased. I don't understand why it happens at all.

Still, it's been around since the days of Nintendo Vs Sega (and earlier no doubt, but I can't think of a decent enough comparisson).

No, it means that you :
1) Really are using the phone as a toy, not as a phone
2) Have overdosed on the kool aid

I'm intrigued by the technology behind Siri (although it does sound heavily watered down from the original designs), voice recognition is an interesting technology, but I really don't believe its anything like being ready for true mass market utilisation.

Would have thought that someone here in the office must have had a 4S by now, but as there doesn't appear to be anyone sat at their desk talking to their phones, the office take-up has been minimal.

Oh lighten up, it was/is the type of post to bring at least a smile to your face.

I got an electric can opener on Friday, its changed the way I'll open cans in the future for sure.

Users have almost totally ignored Siri for the last 12 months.

It only really set this toy world buzzing when Apple said both 'goodbye' and 'jump' .

I totally agree with you. However the iPhone 4S is still a quality device. Siri or no Siri.

I have a new 4s and I really like it. It the only phone I have so its the best phone I had. I have just had two years of a HTC Desire and that was the best phone I had at the time. All this squabbling confuses me. Surely the best phone is the one that is right for the user, its like arguing over whose kids are cuter or whose wife is prettiest. Its all very subjective and personal. Sure we could discuss what processor is quicker or what holds the most music as they are measurable but as to judging overall what is best, I havent a clue what the best phone is for you guys and more than likely for a lot of you its not the one I think is best for me.but viva la difference.

Bravo! Exactly what I've tried to get across. It's not about specs it's about what's right for the individual user. You'll have a hard time getting that across on here though. There are many spec whores around.

As someone who despises the company due to their litigation, I have to agree with your comment.

I don't really want to talk to my phone when I'm walking down a street, on public transport, with friends etc it makes you look like a complete tit.

I remember walking down the corridor using voice activated phone dialling on an old Ericsson flip phone I used to have. Press a button on the side, get deafened by a three toned squawk and say "dial Tracy". Felt like a right pillock doing that.

At least you are not too biased to admit that. I wish more forum members could be the same.

On the litigation side of things, I may be naive, but I don't think Apple are any worse or better than any other company in conducting underhand practices. Obviously they are more high profile than the others. I do have to say though, they should let this rubbish with Samsung drop.

As an app it would have been fairly limited to what it would have allowed you to do with the actual functions and usabilty of the phone.

Apple saw the potential of what it could do if it was intergrated with the ios software rather than on top of it.

Apple haven't pretended to invent this, they havent even tried to give it a flash Applised name like they did with Retina Display or Airplay. It's still called Siri.

Apples app store rules wouldn;t have allowed Siri to work as fully with the ios software as it is capable of, rather than having to change that rule, they have bought the company and aksed them to develope it for their products (I'm assuming the iphone 4S ain't the last we'll see of Siri). There's no cover up or underhanded techniques involved here. Apple made the Siri developers very rich for a while to come (and by all accounts Android has voice activations that works soooo much better than Siri, it's not as if the Android users can argue they have stolen potential multi platform Siri releases in the future).

I'm not convinced that I want to use voice recognition on my phone, but then I haven't experienced Siri. It may well be a completely different experience than most of us have had shouting at our phone only for it to dial some random contact we don't want to talk to.

I shall reserve judgement on it for my own use, but can see how it can change things for some users who are comfortable to use it (and presumable have an office or spend a lot of time alone where no one else can hear them talking to their iphone ).

Only if you're the sort of person to let it bother you

I frankly couldn't give a rat's ass if some stranger thinks I look odd for talking to my phone - there are a whole world of weirder-looking people than me around!!

And you can set the handset up to activate Siri when you raise it to your ear, and then you just look as if you're using your phone like any other Joe Schmo!

Apple did not invent Siri they just bought the company that invented it (along with other stuff they did not invent such as the pinch and zoom on the original iPhone).

Remember when mobile phones first came out, most people thought those using them were t!ts. So give it time, the more people and products that start using voive-recognition technology, the more common place it becomes and then nobody thinks badly of it anymore because we're all in the same boat.

I like the way the Notification Centre sweeps down from the top these days on my iPhone 4, just like my old HTC Hero Android phone did

Each to their own I say. Live 'n' let live.

No more of a tit than those that wear a bluetooth device around their ear 24/7.
My neighbour is one of those that wears his all the time even while he's in his house doing nothing. And yes he looks a complete tit
Saying that though it has become the norm to see people walking down the street looking like they're talking to themselves, whereas before bluetooth anyone walking down the street talking to themselves were closely followed by men in white coats.

It is early days but I can see how the tag "it just works" will soon apply to using voice with the iPhone, I am amazed at its accuracy.
Already, I have changed the way I work. I now am sending emails via my phone rather than my laptop because it is easier. I am able to use my phone safely in the car to send mail and text messages. I have started to use my iPhone based Things todo list manager again because it is now so easy to add entries. I am setting reminders left right and centre for things I wouldn't have bothered with before. The list goes on.
Also, when you can interact by voice the issue of screen size becomes so much less relevant - this seemed to me to be the main criticism of people disappointed by the 4S.”

People have been able to this for years before the iPhone even existed! What a fool!
