Unfortunately like many they think that they have a monopoly on taste and if something doesn't appeal to them it won't sell. There is no point arguing because as has already been said they move the goal posts. The fact is that none of us know whether it will be a success yet - it'll take at least 3 more weeks to know that. If it's still charting and selling by then it's got a great chance.

The other market won't entertain him because he was on the XF (my OH, my BIL and many OHs here) which makes it difficult for him to find a market. I think the choice of album songs is trying to cater to the female market as I assume they have decided that women are less likely to be effected by the anti-XF snobbery than men.

I think Matt and Columbia know this and I think the anti - Xf publicity is carefully orchestrated by the label to cut the ties because they know that long term it won't help him.

We need to separate our expectations from Matt's. He's got a top 10 single and going to have a top 2 album (probably) and even with the single sales he has; compared to where he was 18 months ago he's doing great.

I don't want to come over all Pollyanna because it's a tough industry and if Columbia decide that he cannot make the transition they want they will drop him BUT even if they do (and I don't think they will) he has a fanbase and the chance to make a career out of music which is all he ever wanted.”

I get what you're saying here Wkd..I love this album with a passion, there isn't a track I don't like except maybe RFYL (GB should have sang it himself!) .but if I was honest I think I half expected some of the tracks to be more in the style of his stuff with 7s, which would have been OK with me too... I think what I'm trying to say is..if this approach isn't as successful for him and Columbia as they would like.(and Matt has said that it would be back to the drawing board)..he is so versatile that it wouldn't be a problem to mix it up for his second album. ..Sorry if I am talking utter crap here!
All this said..this album is amazing, the lyrics pull you in his stunning voice makes you feel every word..if this isn't a mega hit then there is no justice in this world!

btw, I apologise for not answering your q in 'the other place' but the answer is I absolutely adore John Lennon hence my somewhat negative views on the other person I mentioned lol. Anyway, I don't think I'll bother much with BJ apart from the charts info.”

Relieved to hear that about JL, cause he did want to give peace a chance and you got to love a person for giving it a go.

Never been a big fan of Paul McCartney either.

Not going to go on BJ either. Some of the neighbours a bit strange to be honest (others lovely though) Good info on the charts though.

I also wouldn't mind a bit more SS sounding songs but we know the man can do anything. I'm sure he will experiment with different styles if he feels that's the best way forward. Just love everything he does.

I'm inclined to agree with the bolded bit WKD - I felt that was well demonstrated by the Into The Light docu, actually I think even the title was indicative of the policy you suggest (apart from the GB bits ), and the way it ended too; Matt saying something like 'that's the end of my XF journey' then doing a cut sign.

Another thing that interested me from the documentary is that it appears to put a lot of the 'blame' for RFYL on Chris Briggs, if you look carefully at the GB bit when he's talking about how Matt came to have the song and the (ahem ahem) 'synchronicity' (sp?) of it.

Can't remember who Pollyana was - sounds like you mean a pessimist? or a realist?

Brilliant post. He's got a career either way. He can write and record and perform music with or without the backing of the X Factor because now he has a bigger fan base than before and a nice steady platform from which to build.

Glad you love at least some of it Laura lol Dare I ask if your download counted towards the charts or was it one of those 'try it out for free' sites that people on here were talking about at the w/e? Honestly, I'm just interested - no axe to grind at all

This is interesting. Whether it is deliberate or not Matt is going to alienate X Factor devotees anyway. So often I read reviews where someone has asked Matt when is he going to record FTEISYF or NIWS, obviously this is never going to happen and Matt is going to loose these fans. The remaining fans he keeps - like this forum will hopefully be enough to sustain his career until he starts to build up a non-X Factor career.

Matt often talks about wanting to be like Will Young, who famously, politely and efficiently extracted himself from the whole Pop Idol arena. I think Matt is doing the same but unfortunately with far more fall out because X Factor is so popular and he's just a bit gobbier than Will. Maybe the MF senses this X Factor exorcism and that is why there is so much hate out there for him.

Still don't think X Factor is the place for singer/songwriters. For Cher and 1D it's perfect.

(Brief after thought re Aiden and Rebecca - maybe a good thing for them though. Why is that? Because they didn't win? Less pressure/exposure?) Now I am confusing myself.
