In 4 decades on screen Emmerdale has produced many legendery characters, Annie Sugden, Amos Brearly, Henry Wilks, Seth Armstrong, Alan Turner, Eric Pollard, etc. But who of recent years will be remembered as Emmerdale legends in 40 years from now?

My top 5:

1. Cain Dingle
2. Aaron Livesy
3. Bob Hope
4. Charity Tate
5. Declan Macey

I don't think Emmerdale has legendery characters like Corrie and Easties do. I'd say Kim Tate tho.

But if you said most of those emmerdale names to a non soap fan they would go who. If you were to talk about Hilda Ogden or Den Watts they'd know who you were talking about.

Maybe not so many younger fans, but anyone over 30 will definately have heard of Amos & Wilks, Seth Armstrong, and old timers Alan Turner and Eric Pollard, who are still there.

I wouldn't count on it.

Yes, you have. Most people won't know who the likes of Henry Wilks is. Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples, Dirty Den and Angie, Bet Lynch and Hilda Ogden are legends that most people would still know and remember.

Emmerdale Farm always managed to pull in an average of 10 million viewers in it's heyday, so I definately think a lot of people out there will remember. How can you be a long-time viewer of Emmerdale since the 70s/80s and not know who Amos & Wilks and Seth were?

Thats why I said in my earlier post non soap fans would not have heard of all of them in the same way they would have heard of Hilda Ogden and den Watts who are much more in the public eye and regarded a lot more as legends than Amos and co.

I never mentioned anything about being a viewer and not knowing who they are.

It was a nod to Amos and his most famous catchphrase.

You're right Scrabbler. Emmerdale has never been able to produce really classic characters like Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner and Dirty Den. That doesn't make it a lesser soap, it's just a fact.

Back on topic - Paddy and Marlon are a great comedy double act and have given the show some wonderful scenes. They'll go down in history as one of it's great pairings just like Amos & Wilks have.

There's no one in the current show who's ever going to be regarded as a classic character in the future.

I think Pollard will, more for his earlier years rather than current plots.

Maybe Edna?

I regard those as very popular cast members Hellingly, but the really classic characters are known by nearly everyone. I just don't think Edna & Pollard are in the Premier League if you know what I mean Ena Sharples is an icon - an overused term, but that's what I feel she is

Oh yes, I don't think anyone will hit the Ena Shaples ? Hilda Ogden level. I meant in the context of "Emmerdale level" classic characters (Annie, Amos, Seth, Kim, etc).

the Dingles (people might not know the individual names but non viewers still know who the Dingles are and associate them with Emmerdale)
Seth

Of the current cast I think Charity, Cain, Debbie and Moira have the potential to become mainstays and legendary characters.
I don't think any of them will become as legendary as the older characters, though, or the likes of Hilda Ogden or Den Watts. Not because these characters or actors were better, but purely because no soap will ever have the mass viewing figures that they used to.

I think the Natalie Rob will stay another few years then move on. But even if she stayed another 10 years i don't think she'd ever become a legendary character. Popular and well remembered by some Ed fans but thats a long way from deserving legendary soap status.
Charity is a good character but will never be a legend either.
I agree about the Dingle family as a whole though.
