Is it correct that the performance of the remote control can be very significantly improved by opening the drop down flap on the front of the Humax box and removing a second protective film covering the remote sensor and the clock/programme display? Many thanks, GSD.

Why not try it?

Because I want to be clear that this is the right thing to do. GSD.

It as much the right thing to do as taking the machine out of the cardboard box it came in. It is part of the protective packaging.

That's fine and thanks very much for confirming this.

I was already aware that the protective film covering the outside of the front flap needed to be removed but had no idea until today that there was a second film covering the display under the flap.

I assume that this explains why for at least the past two years the remote has had to be pointed straight at the machine to get it to respond correctly, and has almost always had to be pressed at least twice to get a response. Hopefully the removal of this second protective film will improve things greatly!

From my own experience I don't think that many people are aware of this, particularly as there is no mention of it in the user manual. Many thanks again for you help, GSD.

It may help. Or it may not as I suspect the real reason why some people need to point the remote straight on is due more the alignment of the sensor behind the panel being slightly out on their machine. Mine is fine and indeed I actually have put a much thicker coloured piece of plastic behind the flap to subdue the absurdly bright display and standby light.

The reception is rubbish, nothing will improve it, I can aim it 1 foot wide and it wont register, every other remote I have can be aimed at the ceiling and work.

I can bounce mine off several walls and the ceiling. Handy if I am laying on the settee off to one side where the direct line is at too much of an angle.

There does seem to be a lot of variance in people's experiences - never had a particular issue with mine, and having tried just now I can point it easily 45 degrees out of alignment and it still works.

Have you discussed with Humax as a Warranty issue? It seems to me that your kit is faulty?

I cant use the original or the all in one if Im more than a yard to the side and 2 yards away from the TV. Thats not much of an angle at all.

It seems everyone has this problem apart from you.

And mjr ...

Although I have had problems in the past with IR devices being interfered with by other electrical items such as Christmas lights, laptop power supplies and wireless video senders.

It's not just pointing it out of alignment (though it's far more limited in this respect than other remotes), it's the viewer being out of alignment i.e. sitting somewhat to the side. It just doesn't like it.

FWIW it works well enough in our house. Comparing it with other devices it's far far worse (and this is a general opinion of most users - have a google), but it works where I normally sit so that's OK.

Cheers,
David.

Exactly, i sometimes sit 8 feet back and 3 feet across and I still have to hold my arm out to get it as close to the centre as possible.

I can point it 2 feet above the box and that wont work either , it has to be pointed directly at the box.

Again, its another sign it was never tested in the real world.

I can confirm this makes a significant difference

Well blow me down. I hadn`t seen that before Graham.

Scraping the said paint/lacquer from the drop down flap does indeed improve things considerably.

It will now operate bouncing of the wall etc.

Shame there isn`t a reward system on this forum. I think that GLT would be off the scale by now.

That said if people are normally using the remote from 12 feet then I guess that is well out of the design requirements. The only time I use a remote from that sort of distance is listening to music from the next room.

I can point my remote directly at the Tv screen and the box still responds, and I've not removed the paint from the inside of the flap where the remote sensor is located. But then I tend to sit directly infront of the Tv, but if I happen to be sat at the desk on the laptop instead of having it on my knee then I can't get the remote to respond without having to point it at the front panel of the HDR, but then the desk is right next to the TV.

Thanks for that. I've just done it and it has improved things. Can't bounce it off the walls or ceiling but any improvement welcome.

I have always looked at people's finger nails..Top politicians pathetic..to me a sign of weakwilled.. All of the family have bitten to the core nails.. as for me my halo shines..Way back in WW2 when i was about 7.. a classmaate died of appendicitis..The teacher told us that it was due to biting his nails.. Never bit mine since that day so when the Soaps finish ..early night tonight...I'll get to grips with the varnish..
