Iphone 4 broken glass

I need some advice my back panel of my iphone has smashed. Is it best to get a proper repair, or buy a new panel on ebay? (How do you know if it's a genuine part?) Or should I sell it as faulty as I would be selling it anyway to upgrade to the 4S.

Is it still under warranty?

I did a similar thing back in January 2011.... and I went to the Apple Store at Meadowhall.

The lovely girl there (under her discretion) replaced the phone for me free of charge... as a one off.

Might be worth a try? Failing that, I think it was £160 odd pound to get it replaced... so maybe if you're going for the iPhone 4S sell it as faulty (as you've mentioned?)

No it's from July last year's past warranty.

I seen some back panels on ebay for £20 but don't fancy doing it myself. Some repair services for about £50 not sure if there any good though. £160 would be no use as I'm selling it anyway.

It's easy to do - just 2 screws. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVeYHKtV5Ac

Thanks looks easy then.

How can I be sure of a genuine part from eBay though?

They are unlikely to be genuine Apple approved parts. But it's not a critical component and just the back panel of the phone, as long as it looks the part you should be OK. Read the feedback from other buyers.

I bought the very thin back glass panel but discovered a problem. It also needs the housing fittings that plastic bit the glass is inserted too. Noticed that seller is selling the lot for £20 I paid £10 for the glass only. So do I need the housing fitting or can I use the old one? Any videos on how to join the glass together? I'm guessing nobody sells it joined together like the video shown?

A quick Google shows that it seems to be readily available already mounted in the frame. It's useless without the frame, no idea why they would even sell that

So I can just take it to the Apple store?

That's what I've read. I can't find anything official but a google brings up things like THIS. May be worth calling you local apple store to check though.

Don't they have a standard tariff?
Anecdotal evidence suggests they sometimes lower the charge.

Worth a try though it sounds fairly easy DIY.

Regardless of warranty, Apple usually make a discretionary replacement at no charge providing,
a) the phone is not under contract to a mobile operator
b) you have proof of purchase
c) they don't have another record of similar or repeated damage.

Try Apple store first.

When I went to the apple store to get the back of my iPhone replaced (wasn't cracked just minor blemishes), the charge was £25 but they didn't charge me anything
