I have a 320gb Humax PVR and was thinking of getting a second one for upstairs as most weekends are blighted the endless stream pointless talent shows and dance competitions and I am exiled from the tonnes of programmes I record but never get to watch. If I buy a second Humax can I transfer a program between them via USB stick?

Standard Definition programs should transfer fine.
HD items are encrypted to prevent you moving them.

Have you tried copying to and from USB stick on your existing box? I ask because I find it to be painfully slow. It's OK for occasional use, but every Saturday night might get a bit tiresome. Especially for anyone waiting to watch the TV downstairs while you're fiddling with the STB!

If you go down this route, you don't necessarily need a second STB to play back the recordings - some TVs will play STB recordings from a USB stick, and many (cheap!) media hubs will too. Even some BluRay players. Check compatibility before buying.

Why not record what you want to watch direct to the second PVR?

Ultimately will do that too but I am sitting at 90% of capacity of mainly films and series I want to watch. Also don't want to be banished upstairs for my programs only so would be good to record upstairs and move downstairs and vice versa when necessary.

That is do-able. I do it all the time. There are various ways of distributing centrally sourced recordings around the house. I keep it simple and use a wireless video sender to bounce my PVR signal to my bedroom TV.

As for catching up on what you already have recorded on the old PVR let your SO have the use of the new PVR.

Yes it is a slow process but a minor inconvenience nothing forward planning or sticking the stuff I want to watch on an external Hard drive that I can wander around the house with. Re the connected TV idea a good one but TV number two is a seven year old portable CRT with a single scart input so no go there.
The other reason for the second Hummy is I need a broadcast source upstairs had a Freeview box initially years ago but don't want to go down that route again as even after the digital switchover the signal is eratic in these parts. (Oxford transmitter).

That looks really interesting but I am reluctant to get under the bonnet and tinker with things for fear of wrecking my box which next to my iPod ranks as my greatest ever gadget.

On the subject of transferring content between PVR's my father in law has just bought a Humax Freeview HD HDD recorder, is it possible to transfer files between the Freesat and Freeview machines.

For SD recordings you should be able to copy content from the Foxsat-Hdr to usb and replay these from the usb drive to the HDR Foxsat T2.

Wait on a minute - this is the exact scenario in our household and the solution is a simple one, it does NOT involve buying a second PVR, let me explain.

What we have is the Humax HDR downstairs, it is pushed to the limit on Saturday evening recording several things, typically whilst we are watching a prior or in progress recording. My wife might want to watch one of the other things that are being recorded (Strictly - which the rest of the household dislike).

So upstairs we have a media player connected to the TV, it connects to our network and streams the recording to the TV upstairs.

To do this you need to apply the unofficial, but much loved, "media bundle" patch by Raydon, you'll find this on the forum. Obviously you also need a network connection, mine is hard-wired but you can run the network over the mains cable too with a home-plug.

The media player we use is this one AC Ryan HD mini about £65 new, there are others that will work that are cheaper I believe.
