The ratings on five are very poor indeed.

It is averaging 150,000 viewers or 2.5% share!

This is way below the 5% share it used to get in 98/99.

However, the good news is that it is beating [only just] 'the terry & gabby show' it replaced.

I fear it will be axed if ratings coninue like this.

Here are the US ratings for the last two years of the show on NBC:

1998
JAN-2.1 million [terror island]
FEB-2.1
MAR-2.0
APR-1.9
MAY-1.9
JUN-1.8
JUL-2.3 [SHOCKWAVE]
AUG-2.1
SEP-2.1
OCT-2.0
NOV-1.9
DEC-1.9

The shows ratings then fall to an all time low of 1.2 million in SEP-99, days before it is axed.

10.30am every weekday

And this is hardly a shock at all. It's an old, failed soap being repeated several years later, an American one at that - you can hardly expect sky high ratings no matter how "cult" the show may be.

What do you expect for a repeat? It would be a better comparison to see how the last 2 entire (repeat) runs of "Charlie's Angels" did on Five. I'd imagine they appeal to the same audience profiles.

Why are you comparing the rtings for the repeat of the series in the UK with the first run in the US?

150,000 isn't good, but it is likely it will build, as everyone knows that SB was not a success here right away - because the show is really crap at the start. Paula and Ricardo, Meg & Ben, Paulas Mother, Casey and Rae are the extremely boring story-lines. I really doubt Five expect great ratings right now, but I think they knew to please the hardcore fans they had to show it from the very first episode.

Actually, 150K for that time of day on Five isn't bad. It's only a cheap US acquisition, after all.

Plus, I think that's more than stuff like Brainteaser (yawn) normally gets.

Plus the students have only just gone back to Uni so at the moment they're more likely to be doing other things (like actually attending a lecture every now and then or, more likely, catching up with friends after the summer).

Give them a month or so for the usual student work ethic to kick in and then they'll be at home watching SB as usual.

If Five knew how to please the hardcore fans they wouldn't cut objectionable bits from the show. Channel 5 knew what they were doing first time around but this time I'm not so sure.

Where are these ratings from?

Five have bought the first year so i doubt they would just take it off when they have spent money on the rights to show a whole year!
I fully expect ratings to increase over time. Bear in mind that its only been on 2 weeks and it gets a hell of a lot better later on!

I'm not going to get too worried yet as I am confident that they will improve with time.

Yea exactly, and plus it also depends on how it performs compared to what else was in its slot beforehand (not including The Wright Stuff as that has just moved slots).
Its a soap so people who never watched it first time have a chance and soaps build up on their audiences.

dont worry, SB is one of the shows that you can just start watching, i never started watching it reguarly the first time round until have way through the first year i think.

the trouble with the ratings any way, is they dont show a true reflection, as i guess there are a lot of people (like me) who are at work when it is on and therefore tape the show and watch it later.

I am gutted as I keep forgeting to tape it, do these figures count all the people who time their video or use sky +? I'm sure all those students - like me - who were hooked on it and missed vital classes are taping it and catching up on a boring sunday afternoon! hope it carries on til the hunky Cole appears!

Hey!!! I'll have you know I picked my lectures and tutorials this year all on the basis that I would be able to watch SB before racing my wee heart out to uni LOL

And not all students are lazy alcoholic bums Just the lucky ones

There are probably lots and lots of people who watch/tape/Sky+ it but it isnt counted because the ratings system only does a sample of a few thousand homes.

Those who are in the BARB sample and do record the show will be counted, but not in the overnight ratings as people who tape shows aren't counted straight away, only people who actually watch it there and then.
