I have a HTC desire and to increase the text writing size i've been told rooting the phone would solve this problem

Can anyone explain what rooting the phone is and how it's done..?

Thanks

This page on the XDA forum will tell you how to root your phone.

Make sure you have read, and re-read the instructions before you start.

Make sure you backup your apps and data. Rooting to get bigger text size sounds slight overkill, but will help your memory.
It will void your warranty and you will lose your HTC Widgets.

Although rooting sounds a big step, it is straight forward. Just follow the steps from the link in #2.

Why would you lose HTC apps just by rooting? Also while it is theoreticaly possible that you could have warranty issues if you root your phone this is very rare in practice as it is usually possible to unroot. If you send your phone off for a replacement screen they are not going to be worried about you having super user privlages. Anyway you could always do what I did and pass a 9v current through your phone to completely knack it, that way no ammount of modding can be detected.
