I think its a mixture of

- Apple use glass which is less resistant to impact
- regardless of the back material, the front side also was weaker on the iphone
- some people refuse to accept this shows a flaw in Apple's design.
It's the exact same glass as all phones use, and for the record I have friends who have trashed their galaxy in the exact same way as the video

As far as I'm aware Gorilla Glass is a brand name used by only one manfacturer who has rights to it - namely Corning.

Just to add my two penn'orth (sp?) my iPhone 4 has been in & out of pockets and bags with keys/zips etc for the last 12 months with no screen protection and there's no scratches on it (there's just a Gelaskin on the back.

Glass on a phone is just as bad as chocolate wings on a plane.

No one knows for sure if apple do actually use Gorilla Glass. They nor the company who makes it has ever said.

You'll have to retract that comment when my supersonic Wispa plane goes into production.

first of all.... does anyone find it hilarious the way they all go "wooaaahhhh" every time they drop a phone?!

secondly... this is just another reason why I'm glad I haven't been sucked into the whole iphone thing. they HAVE to be the most over-rated thing on the planet!

Apple do not advertise it as using Gorilla Glass so i'd say it doesn't.

Personally i think folk are getting desperate if they have to resort to a drop test. Drop it at that height i'd be expecting a damaged phone.

I prefer the design of the iPhone 4S as do millions and millions of others. It's not for everyone though.

Also i've seen a trashed Galaxy after a friends drunken night out... it's not any sturdier.

it can be sturdier without being immune to a drunken night out!

The video shows it clearly IS sturdier.

In other news, a dropped Casio watch it likely to suffer less damage than a dropped Rolex. From this I conclude that Casio's are better and Rolex's require bubble wrap.

What have they made it out of, porcelain or something?
Who would have thought... if you drop something, it breaks. Amazing! Mind blown!

You also neglect to mention that the video is sponsored by a company selling insurance for iPhones...

It all comes down to personal responsibility, or lack of.

"If I drop something then it's up to the company to make sure it's indestructible."

Or, I could attempt to make sure I don't drop it in the first place.

If that means spending extra money and rendering my phone non-clone like, but allowing me to customise it, then so be it.

No it doesn't, it's hardly scientific. For example they wernt dropped at the exact same height on the exact same spot on the ground. Also they wouldn't have been completely flat when dropped.

I could do the exact same test and come out with the opposite result.

As I said I have had friends drop their galaxy from a lower height than that and totally destroy the screen. Oddly enough it still worked through all the cracks lol.

Well I did watch that video in the end an yes its very inconclusive.

I doubt their sponsors could have been persuaded to run to 50+ phones to create a pseudo 'crash test dummy' industry standard.

Squaretrade offer warranties on ALL phones, iphones and galaxy S2s. It is, of course, in their interests, to point out the failings of popular models, but its not like they pick on the iphone.

Similar for blackberry tablet, same company:

Like I said, (though perhaps didn't clarify), I went to a job at a Southend phone repair depot; *most* of their work was around replacing iphone screens; it's a growing industry. They replaced screens on other phones but it was disproportionately dominated by damaged iphones. Can dig out the photos of buckets of broken iphones!

No it doesn't, it's hardly scientific. For example they wernt dropped at the exact same height on the exact same spot on the ground. Also they wouldn't have been completely flat when dropped.
Yes, fair point. It's not conclusive. I would be happy to see any results that contradict its findings though, rather than rely on anecdotal evidence.

Here's another one:

iphone vs nokia. Equally unscientific, obviously nokia biased. Same results though. Are there any videos that show Apple doing better, or at least the same as other models of phone?

With Apple the whole ecosystem is without doubt considered in the design .

So they have bumper bumper sales, ensure many buy the top end model and no doubt make more money on Applecare + repairs than most others do selling phones.
I just cannot understand why the people on this forum who seem to hate Apple with an irrational vengeance are surprised that a commercial business aims to improve its margins by selling accessories. Name me one business in the world that doesn't want to do this. I happen to own a family business which is a pet shop - we sell rabbits at a low margin in the hope that people will buy their hutches from us at a more healthy margin. How come it is such a revelation that Apple do the same ?

Back on topic, I happen to keep my iPhone in a case, because contrary to popular belief as an Apple fanboy firstly I couldn't care less what it looks like, and secondly I also couldn't care less who knows I've got one. For me I use Apple products because I like their functionality and what they do for me not their effect on people round me.

Well said, there does seem to be an awful lot of anti-apple bias and myths on this forum. There are a faction of Apple enthusiasts that give us regular Apple users a bad name. There are also ones from the other respectful companies users. The latter seem to be overlooked though.

Yet its often seems there are only Apple users wish to portray 'dissenters' as haters.

This at times does make for an increased of amusement. Thus the OP's post?

Oh really? People seem to be much more vocally anti-Apple than anything else, no?
Android users are the most vocal at the moment, have been for some time. Can't go a day without seeing some whiny little bitch have a dig at Apple users.

I doubt it is just the user, more like the pedestal created.

They want your money, so what?

I don't think this is true at all. They portray themselves as that by constantly jumping on any post or thread that remotely praises anything Apple, only to make non constructive debate, such as "follower of fashion" comments. Remind you of anyone?

You'll just have to get used to it, I'm afraid. The people you refer to are small in number but vociferous. It seems that any threads portraying Apple in a remotely positive light are so offensive to them that they absolutely must make snide comments about the products and the people who own them. Almost every pro-Apple thread attracts such comments very early on. It's quite telling that threads discussing Android products rarely attract any such comments.
