I have a questions about mash...
Now I like spuds in their various guises, I'm particularly fond of roasties and will 3 smallish tat's.
I liek mash a great deal too but find that if I only use 3 smallish tats, they don't make enough mash for a reasonable portion.
I just don't get it!

Something to do with thebrain and body perception of a mashed/pureed food over complete peices?

I get the same with mash/hash/soups/stews. Possibly because of the lack of chewing. Also you loose something when you mash/puree food. The fiber/structure must be effected.

I'm sure there's some crazy scientific reason for it.

I have exactly the same cooking quantity phenomenon with eggs.

Two boiled eggs, huge.

Two scrambled eggs, small.

I now use greater quantities of potatoes than I think I need for mash, and fewer than I think I'll need if I'm making jackets, and it kind of works out!

eggs are exactly the same... I need 3 egs for scrambleing or omelette but two boiled eggs is spot on.
Strange isn't it?

I love mash and I know I over do it, I find it hard to judge things like this. I'm 54, got a A at A-level cookery and I still can't judge rice portions to save my life!
My husband always points this out to me and knows it annoys me - I tried to measure my rice via cups last week then I didn't have enough! I am calculating portions due to diet/calories so I do realise a portion is small - but I still don't get it right!

As 'justabloke' said - Eggs are the same for me - 1 boiled enough, scrambled, omelette etc barely touches the sides.

I'm the same with rice portions. I compensate by cooking more than I need so that there is always some left over. I'd rather have too much than not enough. I justify it by thinking "Well, it's only a few grains of rice wasted".

I compensate by thinking my husband can take it to work the next day! I'm about to go on the potato guesstimation!
While I adore them and leftovers wouldn't be a problem, I'm dieting!

1/3 of a cup suits me fine for rice. (Using measuring cups).
For pasta (penne/fusili) I use a full coffee mug. They will change depending on your type of mug.

I always do a lot more mashed potato than I think I will need because I hate not having enough. If there is some left over it can be used for potato cakes.

Mash is much easier to digest than other forms of spud I think, so you can eat more.

Why not weigh the rice? I do about 75g per person, tends to work out about right.

What is this 75g you speak of? Surely that is not British?

I'm really going to try that, thanks - rice is my least favourite carb ( I love mash but fresh is best there IMO). My husband must be sick of rice for lunch the following day!

Like all foods left over bacteria multiplies - but rice shocked me!

If you use smaller potatoes then you will get a smaller portion of mash. It isn't exactly rocket science..
