When I installed IOS 5 to my iPhone 4 it seemed to work OK-ish for a few syncs with the device staying in the iTunes window when I disconnected it and the Sycn Now button ungreyed – i.e. pressable).
[The Sync Now button is on the iPhone under Settings - General - iTunes Wi-Fi Sync - Sync Now]
It was a bit intermittent and I then had to sometimes toggle the iPhone Wi-Fi off and on to get iTunes to see it again and to un-grey the Sync Now button.
That didn’t last long and I couldn’t get it to work again easily so I fully uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime and Bonjour etc. as detailed on the Apple web site and tried again after installing iTunes.
[note that a full uninstall of all iTunes software followed by a reinstall has never lost me a single thing in my iTunes such as music, playlists, star ratings etc but you are supposed to back everything up JUST IN CASE… I don’t bother as it always works for me]
So with iTunes newly installed I got the Wi-Fi sync working OK for 1 sync but then the device started disappearing the second I disconnect it from the PC (not ejecting just pulling the cable out like it worked originally for a couple of tries).
Looking on forums other people are having problems too but not seen anyone have it work then not work for no good reason.
I have Windows 7 running on a PC with all the updates and made no changes to the PC during the time of this issue.
I tried rebooting my router, I tried rebooting my iPhone, I tried using a new and different Wi-Fi network (I have a 3MiFI dongle). I even started doubting that the PC plugged into the Ethernet port of router was not enough and connected the PC via Wi-Fi but that is obviously not how it needs to be connected. I have Windows 7 firewall which I have turned off but no joy there.
So I have tried a few things and not solved anything.
Maybe I should just forgot Wi-Fi sync until the next IOS update as I really don’t need it but let’s not start that argument!
One last thought… I have AVG Free Anti Virus – could that be affecting it – I don’t think you can stop it?
