O2 Pay As You Go Sim into Vodafone iPhone

Hi,

Quick question!

My wife currently has an iPhone 3G on Pay as You Go with O2 and I currently have an iPhone 4 contract phone, again with O2. I also have a 2nd contract with Vodafone which I am eligible for an upgrade – next month.

My question is – if I upgrade my Vodafone contract and get an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4, will I be able to give this to my wife so she can put her O2 Pay as You Go sim inside to use? Are iPhones on contract, locked to the service provider or can you put any sim into it?

i think all operators do not allow you to unlock the iPhone until your contract term is up

....thats what I thought, however, iPhone don't come network branded so I thought it might be possible to put in a different sim?

Policy on unlocking varies and may involve paying a fee. Its always best to try a sim card in the phone from another network to see if it works. The iPhone 4 uses a propriety micro sim as Apple like to be awkward.

Call Vodafone and ask them to unlock your current phone (as you're at the end of the contract), then get a replacement as your upgrade and keep that for you.

Vodafone will unlock your iPhone at anytime even after you start a new contract and it is free. I got mine done for free in the first 3 weeks of having it.

You will need to put in another operators sim to let iTunes unlock phone though but you get an email from them when the process is complete and thats when you put your phone into iTunes.

Hope this helps

…….^this, sounds like the perfect solution. I’ll just upgrade my Vodafone contract and get an iPhone and then call up and unlock it so I can put my wife’s O2 sim into it so she can use it.

Only thing now is, that I either need to get a sim cutter tool or get a new iPhone sim from O2 as my wife’s sim is the normal sized one and not the new smaller versions which fit into an iPhone 4.

……do those sim cutters really work?!!!

Just get your wife to go to O2 and tell them she's been given an unlocked iPhone as a present and she needs to swap her current SIM for a micro SIM. Takes a couple of minutes to swap the number over. There's even a page on the O2 website to get them to swap. You just put the serial number of the new SIM in along with your phone number, and they move the number across. http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/
