I had endless issues with a Sony 7100ES AVR and their flagship BDP 5000ES Blu Ray Player. It would not pass 1080/24p.
Turned out it's an HDMI compatibility issue, which can be really tricky as adherence to the full set of standards is not compulsory [seriously daft eh], and one can have kit on different versions.
a] BDP5000ES is Ver. 1.3
b] 7100ES Ver 1.1
c] Cable Cord Vwer 1.3
Sony were brilliant and took back the AVR and put in a later HDMI board ver 1.2, that passed 1080p, but even this has a slight niggle. I have to set output manually to 1080/24p on a permenant basis [but I do not mind that]. I suppose I was lucky in that I had their absolute top of the range AVR and absolute top of the range Blu Ray Player; so asked for some help.
Good luck, as it can be a minefield, either it's a simple problem like getting a better cable or can be real messy and take a lot of investigation, sometimes with no good resolution [eg if Sony had not upgraded my board that would have been the end of it!]
I also got a pop when a DTS Master Audio film ended or dropped to one of those DVD quality Adverts, or one stopped the player and it reverted to the Home screen! There was no resolution to that problem. I just learnt that if its very loud to press the Amps mute button before stopping the player.
