Have Android phones stopped the innovation in the phone market?
Now they call copy Apple there's no real design quality there just a production line of budget phones and the odd high end model that looks exactly like last years.
So it's meant to take on the App market but that's at it's peak now what is there not an app for? Think of all the classic phones we have had 3310, 3510, 7210 K750i, K800i, C905, W995, N95, N96, Pixon, Viewty, N Gage, V600 the list is endless. Name one stand out Android? Within three months it's out of date. Blackberry and Iphone are the only alternative to these clones production line models for an original design right now. Name one Android that's still cool after 18 months like Iphone 4? There smart phone market has finished design. No longer do we get Cyerbshot and Walkman phones it's Xperia but which model? I can remember when it was SE's flagship smart phone now it's a watered down brand and a production line of cheap Iphone wannabes. No wonder Sony Ercisson are not popular now they lost ground after the C905 and it's faults and made the big error going with Symbian. I'm actually a fan of Samsungs Bada OS found on Wave phones it's got less apps on it's store but it's faster and the design is better. Samsung and SE need to go back to the drawing board. Anybody remember the W995 the sound quality was probably better than an Iphone through speakers. Why can't we get flagship walkmans again? |

Sorry, what? There is plenty of innovation. The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus have curved screens. The Motorola Razr is incredibly thin and has that cool watch thing. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play!
If you were arguing that there is too little variation from the nothing-but-a-screen form factor then I might be inclined to agree with you a little, but you then offer up the iPhone as an alternative. They just released a new one that had exactly the same design as the old one. Nobody wants phones that are designed for certain things any longer - they don't want a cybershot phone because that implies it is rubbish for everything else. If you want to take good photos, buy a camera. Same goes for the Walkman range, if you want to listen to music on the go, buy an mp3 player. I would never dream of using my phone to listen to music as the battery might run out. The reason Sony Ericsson are doing badly is simply because they were slow off the mark bringing decent smart phones to market, it's nothing to do with what platform they have chosen to adopt. The same can be said of Nokia. I have no doubt that if they had meego going out to market when smartphones were beginning to take off rather than trying to bodge symbian onto touch screens, they would still be a major player in the smart phone market. |

Why would you say that? The form factor? How else would you make a phone that has touch input as its primary user interface? Plus there are more than a few Android phones that incorporate keyboards.
I put it to you that there are actually very few high-end Android phones selling with a 3.5" screen. They have all chosen to go down the path of a larger screen. A screen that uses a completely different technology to that on the iPhone (AMOLED). Hardly a copy. |

If anyone is killing innovation, that would be apple with their law suit slinging they have been doing recently. The iphone 4/S was not and is not cool. Its actually an awfful looking phone. So much space on the front wasted. However i do like the sides of the iphone 4. A standout Android phone that has been out longer than 3 months would be the S2, or before that the Desire HD. Both lasted at the top longer than the 3 months you quote. Bada? Faster? lol!! Can i have some of what you've been on please! Its not bad but, faster than what? My S2? A desire HD? Very much doubt that!!

Hang on, which phones are copies of iphones? Haven't we been through this already? There is a limit to to what a large touch screen device can look like.

Ok so there's the odd stand out phone but my post is about the factory line of Iphone copys? There's no doubt Andorid phones are just taking on Apple.
No phone looks the same, and all of the high end Android phones have better spec and in some cases look better than the iPhone 4/S design. |

Apple does not innovate. They refine. Therefore, Apple is killing innovation in the smartphone market, while everyone else is driving it.

The technology has overtaken the need, so innovation is only craved by technobabbleites not the masses.
It's easy to forget the normal people out there when stuck in forums like this. Most people just don't care about the latest thing. Only that it does what they want it to and that's not usually a lot, unless you are a tech freak....

No it isn't stifling innovation. The more models and platforms the better. Competition is good and drives innovation in order for new models to stand out from the crowd and outdo the competition. I personally like the look of the WP7 phones as the OS looks radically different. However there is a lock in issue with platforms which makes users stick to the same platform so that their existing apps and familiarity etc work on their new phones.
Phones are often quite intimate devices that are with you all the time. Probably explains why some of these fanboy threads get so heated at times. Bottom line is that it's very subjective and people stick with what suits them best. The overall package, experience, reliability and ease of use often counts for more to many then raw specs though. |

I think you are wrong OP and I also think these kinds of things do no good for the general view of us Apple users.
I think Samsung, HTC etc have been excellent for the mobile phone market in general. As an Apple user I'm delighted for the competition, it means that next year they are going to have to think harder, otherwise they may start losing more ground on Android devices. Personally I think the iPhone is still the best aesthetically, but that is very much based on the individual. As someone else has said there are still only a certain number of ways you can design a touch screen mobile. |

Never really understood why people get so heated about which phone is best though. If you are happy with it then good for you, but it does not mean if someone uses something else it must be bad. I use an iPhone over an Android one as I prefer how they work and what they can do so it’s best for me but I can understand that other people will find the Android phones better…I don’t fel a need to slag their choice off though! |

If Android is so good why is there not one stand out model selling millions?
What Android can sell about 3 million on the first week of launch? That tells me there's a mass market of Androids for people and particular tastes. Make a good Android phone and I might reconsider. |

This is an advantage that Apple have in that only they can make their phones which means that they have the media all to themselves for its release. |

It can be difficult to build a single stand out phone when there are a lot of manuafactuers all making phones with the same OS installed. It's the same with laptops that are all running Windows 7 - it's difficult to make one stand out from the others.
This is an advantage that Apple have in that only they can make their phones which means that they have the media all to themselves for its release. I'm sure only Samsung use that OS? |

Been out longer than the iphone 4S and still better. Faster CPU, better screen, thinner, lighter etc. |
