I would have though Android was doing well because they cater towards the lower end of the market as well as the higher end.

There are so many android phones out there to choose from.

Not an android hater before anyone says anything. You should buy what you want because you're going to be the ones using the phone not everyone else

Um no, Samsung wouldn't use an image resized to the size of an iPhone to promote their phone. Surely this isn't that hard a thing for you to grasp?

The Galaxy S is bigger than the iPhone, it has a 4" screen not a 3.5" one.

Therefore the image Apple put out was deliberately misleading as it showed both phones at exactly the same height and width despite the obvious size differences...

Most phones are rectangular, black and have a screen so I don't see how you can 'copy' the concept? I'm sure he was mighty peed off with Android, lets be honest Apple ruled before Android came along, then all of a sudden smart phones were on the market to suit all pockets, only got a couple of hundred quid and want a phone that overall was on a par with the 3GS? No problem, have an Android. I'm pretty sure I'd be mighty peed with them myself if in his shoes. Apple computers were always a niche market, grapics etc but those days are long gone and it looks like the iPhone is going into a niche market too, nothing wrong in that, it will still sell by the millions but will never again outsell Android phones overall. Its not rocket science to work that one out so why all the arguments?

Steve Jobs was a great marketeer and developer but for a smart man sure was dumb when it came down to his treatment for cancer.

The only thing I get from Apple's recent attempt to ban Samsung Android Tablets is that they must think its at least as good as their iPad, otherwise they wouldn't be so concerned.

Posted from my HTC Desire - now that's a proper smartphone

i didn't know that.

so Jobs had nothing whatsoever to do with the design (or development) of any Apple products?

he literally just turned up to do his spokesman type thing?

Ive was obviously the head designer, but i would have thought that other people - perhaps even including Jobs - would have had some input as to what it was they wanted Ive to design.

if you think i'm saying they look the same because they're the same size, then you're kind of missing the point.

here are two other pictures - would you say they look the similar, or completely different...

Once again. That's the app drawer. Put that phone on the main screen with its weather widget and clock widget it looks nothing like the iphone! Also the fact the picture has been doctored to look the same size like the galaxy tablet picture apple doctored.

Why do posters of this image insist on using a photo of the Samsung with its app drawer open? I could post a pic of a Nokia 6303i classic and it would look roughly Appleish because of the structured icon display.

ETA sorry Stiggles, didn't see that post just above mine. Great minds alike hey?

I really do find the OS stale and boring.

Yeah, the thread that makes no sense whatsoever! Apple are the ones killing innovation by crying like kids, running around suing folk anytime someone brings out something better.

Kinda like ios then with its bland grey and blue tints to it? Looks bloody awful and has not changed one bit in the years its been out.

At least with Android like im doing with my phone right now is installing a new launcher, installing a nice new theme, changing the icons, adding a few nice widgets to the homescreen which you cant do with your iphone.......need i go on?

You stick with your boring tiles on the screen of your OS which you cant change the look of, and i shall just enjoy my freedom to do whatever the hell i like with mine ok?

Putting my neutral hat on, I can see what is appealing to the majority of Apple consumers in that it subscribes to the keep it simple stupid (kiss) philosophy. I personally find the operation of IOS devices clinical, sterile and yes, uninteresting in the extreme.

The ad about weight watchers with that daft sod saying "I'm addicted to my iPhone" makes me smile yet worry for her well-being. I think worry of being a porker (she is quite clearly very far from that ) is the least of her worries.

Yep. In the last three months I have tried every conceivable ROM for a Desire S. Ones with Sense 3.5, ones with Sense 3.0, another running 2.1, another with Cyanogen Mod 7.1, all running Android, all with their own way of working, none causing any problems in terms of operability and all giving me a totally different experience as a user.

Maybe you could tell us in which way, you think Android is poor? I can easily tell you why iOS/iPhone is extremely poor, at least for my needs :-

Closed file system. I can't freely transfer files to and from the device, and put them where I want.
I have to use the iTunes or iCloud for any sort of file transfers / synching
iPhone's as a whole, tend not to be very good when being used as a phone. And this has been true since the dammed things were first released.
I can only put Apple authorized apps on an iOS device, unless, I want to jailbreak it and void any sort of warranty it might have.
The development tools and sdk are free, but I have to pay if I want to run my own code on an iOS device. With Android, I just download the USB driver and away I go.
A lack of dynamic wallpaper without the need for a special app.
In general, I like Apple devices. I think they're well designed and easy to use but they just lack the features that I really need, as somebody who's a wee bit more technical minded than your average Joe Bloggs on the street.

And I'll be honest. My current phone (a Nexus S) didn't cost me a penny. It was given to me by Google earlier in the year .when I was at GDC in San Francisco. This easily replaced my Experia X10 which I game to my wife.

I think this is the first time since I've owned and Android device, that I've been bothered to write down why I think iOS devices just don't cut the mustard in comparison to Android. But I figured if I could write something meaningful, then maybe you would be encouraged to do the same.

OK, so the app drawer looks remarkably similar to the iPhone, and its that image that Samsung used on the box of the phone, and in their advertising of the phone.

Android software is overrated.

Whilst they give third party uses a chance to get involved, i still think the ios performance is better.

Overrated by whom? The millions who keep flocking to it? Or are you talking about the apps in general. For every making farting noises on a phone app on android you get one on Apple too.

I'd say iOS is pretty poor. Have you seen iOS 5 running on a 1st gen iPad? It;s pretty shocking!

if nothing else, if Android is now more popular than iOS, does this mean all the Android users are now the sheeple, the drones, the fashion victims?

or would that be really childish and petty?

Perhaps, if they were all using the exact same phone design, OS theme, etc. etc. But they aren't

So even if it weren't petty and childish, that argument would be dead in the water.

Very telling insight into the world of apple and those who dare challenge them, demonstrates how worried they are.”

I was surprised by the extent of those disturbing megalomaniac views but, regrettably, it does still appear to be company policy today.

Instead of fair market place competition between the iPhone and Android mobiles, we have the deeply unethical policy by Apple of trying to hinder and close down competitors by the use of large numbers of well-paid patent lawyers and that's just not on.

In the medium term, I sincerely hope that Apple fail in their cynical and anticompetitive attemps to destroy their legitimate competitors.

ah, OK.

so if lots of people buy an iOS device, its not because they happen to prefer iOS, its because they are sheep, drones, fashion victims...

but if lots of people buy an Android device, its not because they are sheep, drones, fashion victims, its because they happen to prefer Android.

got it.

Don't put words in my mouth, I have never and will not use the 'sheeple' argument to try and argue against iOS.

But you seem to have missed the entire point of that argument completely - it's more the selling of millions of the exact same physical device than iOS.

You will never get an Android phone that is so common, simply because there are so many of them.

Seems to work fine on mine... but that's with nothing to compare it to.

i didn't mean to put words in your mouth, but am speaking more generally about that sort of guff that gets bandied about.

apparently because i own an iPhone, its because i'm a mindless idiot only motivated by fashion.

that kind of misses the point though - if people happen to prefer iOS, why shouldn't they buy an iPhone?

the point is still that most people likely buy an iOS device because they like iOS, not because they are mindless idiots motivated only by fashion.

hypothetically speaking, what do you suppose people who liked Android would do if there were only two (smart)phones - the iPhone and the Nexus?
