What do record contracts actually look like?
Simon Rodgers

I'm just interested to know what sort of terms and conditions there are in a recording contract and what sort of get-out clauses there are, especially where the record companies can drop acts like a stone if their records fail to sell, etc.

I can't be the only person to have ever wondered this.

They must be a well kept secret or else the whole terms & conditions may make the label look bad.

I would imagine they are not too far removed from terms and conditions of employment for any worker.

Record company equals the employer, the artist is the employee and what is set out is what expected of them and if they fail to meet standards(i.e make money) their employment is terminated!

^^I think it would mostly make the artists look bad, not the labels

Anyway, you're not the only one who wonders what the contracts include There was a time when I wanted to learn everything, but since then I've realized that maybe I'm better off not knowing all the technical details I don't even think the artists themselves care THAT much about the terms and conditions of the contracts. It must be the business of their management. That said, I don't think there are that many "scandals" in the record contracts.Maybe the odd complicated term, but nothing too prepostrous

I agree. If I ever have the chance of getting signed I'll definitely read the small print!

A lot will depend on how you get signed in the first place. Boybands and 'put together' bands are notorious for having awful contracts and I can't imagine the X Factor winners contract is very good. Someone like Oasis who had record labels fighting over them probably got a great contract.

It will be a very large, multi paged document probably with lots of terms and conditions as well as stipulations.
