Okay I know, yet another Eastenders thread right! Well hear me out on this one because I feel this must be highlighted.

I can’t be the only one who thinks Eastenders has just been catering for the younger viewers recently; I mean I can’t really tell the difference now between both EE and Hollyoaks, and yes I am being serious. Look at all the characters they have been concentrating on; Spencer, Mickey, Kareena, Jules etc. Ok fair enough, they did have the whole Dot cancer storyline, but that was just a rehash of Peggy’s cancer plot with another character. And then you have those storylines that are made just to please the teens, e.g. ‘Shannis’ (what a stupid name for starters, not very clever ), and Kalfie (goodness another stupid name, sounds like a hideous monster out of The Lord of the Rings). Lets face the truth guys, these storylines came out of those terribly annoying fanatics who made up this storyline on the internet then the producers saw this and turned it into a storyline. I mean I can’t think of a worse way of creating a storyline then by listening to some few fanatics. Not only will you end up with a storyline so predictable and vomit inducing, you will also by selling out so to speak. Us fans do not want to see what we want, we want to see something that can surprise us and excite us. We also want to see quality and GREAT acting, not just good acting.

I mean the producers and writers have alienated their older viewers (and some younger viewers in my case) so much that they have created a ‘Byker Grove’ type show on prime time, quite literally. They need balance, between young and old, and they need to represent both groups as realistically and wisely as possible. Because it seems to me that all teenagers on Eastenders are either tearaways and just plain freaks, and all the older characters are a bunch of moaning so and so. I mean I am not a tearaway or a freak so to speak, I am an individual and a interesting individual at that. And that’s what EE needs to do; it needs to make its characters as different as possible to appeal to all age groups.

Personally I think EE needs to please the teenagers is its ultimate downfall throughout these past 2 and a half years. I think what the Producers and writers needs to understand that EE doesn’t have a core audience, its core audience is literally the British public, not the teenagers or the housewives. So lets hope Katherine the new exec will see this problem, highlight it and sort it out.

P.s. And guys if you don't mind i am going to copy all the threads here about how to improve EE and what you will expect to be improved with the new exec etc and i am going to link it to an e-mail i am going to send Katherine........So please tell me if you do not want your post being linked.

I agree with some of what you have said but a new boss has just taken over and if rumours about the ferreira's going are true and it looks like they are EE is already off loading it younger cast.

You go lala! Yeh I agree, I've been watching Hollyoaks lately and EastEnders and I can see only one difference. Hollyoaks is a soap which began on focusing on young characters and they do it quite well. EastEnders teens are all the same, all boring, all have the same kind of personalities and none of them are pleasant. Whilst the oldies are either bible bashers or seriel moaners who appear every now an again to have a rah with the new neighbours in between scenes featuring the HollyEnders gang and their mindless drivel stories.

Every one of the brat pack characters are pretty much the same. In Hollyoaks they are all different in personalities and those that are similar usually end up in conflict. If Eastenders had more minor charcaters who only chip in for comedy or idle chit chat in the pub like they have in other soaps it would be more believable. Any character there is now cannot be taht person as they have already been established as a main character. The next 3 characters introduced into the show should be 'sub-characters' and then a mega-character should be introduced who has a major issue for a storyline like a psycho or somebody ill.

They've been trying to please us, have they? Could've fooled me.. Most of my friends hate the state of the show currently. I think it's only the 11-13 bracket that dig the likes of Spencer, Mickey etc.

And yet, coronation seems to be everybody's can't-miss show over here. If I want to watch a show with light plots and cute guys, then Home & Away is the obvious choice.. I don'tknow many who find EE appealing. I mean, apart from Dennis there are no heart-throbs living in the square anyway.. I think EE has failed to cater properly for any one group of viewers recently..

I agree.........Dennis aint no man in my eyes lol!

But EE can't be aimed at solely one age group............It has to appeal to everyone! Like Corrie and to some extent.

Oh and darling it does cater for a younger audience........Just go onto the BBC boards and you'll see. Scary!

Yeah, but they've certainly attempted to appeal to certain groups of viewers.. And, like I said, failed miserably! I mean bringing back the likes of Den Watts and rebuilding the Watts family, was surely a move to placate the older viewers, who'd recall the greatness of Angie and Den etc.

Lol, the BBC Board inhabitants can only be tweenies.. Not quite teenagers. I really don't think any over-14 year old could find Spencer attractive.. could they?

An internet petition would be brilliant. does anyone know how to go about setting one up?
Characters that need to be gotten rid of are Spencer, Juley, Ronny and Sonia. None of the others bother me that much. Very difficult to put in an order of most annoying but after last week Sonia's number one: bringing a total stranger into her house and thinking she's a brilliant nurse putting a plaster on her knee. Hate "Saint" Sonia with such a passion, maybe even more than I hate Spencer

Emmerdale and Corrination Street are just as bad with pushing young characters.

I disagree. Corrie and Emmerdale have a lot of the younger characters yes, but they actually balance them out with the older characters and even have both the young and old characters interact!

Exactly, Maria and Candice both interact with Audrey, Tyrone with Jack, Vera, Tommy and Kevin, Kirk with Les.
In EE, Sonia and Martin are rarely seen with Pauline and Derek and they live in the same house as them!!
This is another of EE's problems: the only interaction is between family members, not as much the neighbours, which isn't very true to life of any community.

Jane and Ian's love interest, Dots Cancer - oh yes, so popular among the teenagers. There is a good balance and for a show that has always had young characters about, I think it's extremely unrealistic the way Emmerdale was all of a sudden adding young cast - the same goes for Corrie who never started off with young characters.

Sarah Platt and her friends have dominated Corrie nights a hell of a lot over the last few years.

Lucy Speed (aka Natalie Evans) was on loose women today and she basically said in a round about way that Eastenders are currently solely marketing the soap at the teenage market.

The thing is, though Eastnders has always been watched by people as young as 6 to people as old as … (well god knows, how old), but they never targeted it at a specific audience. It was always for adult viewers and up to parents whether their children watched or not.

Anyone agree

P.S. Lucy also blamed the production crew and scriptwriters for the shows lack of quality (again in a round about way because after all she does want to work on the BBC again).

Now i'm 19 and i feel like i have nothing in common with any of the teens in Enders- they are truley irritating and far to similar for my liking.

Argeed but all this has been done by LB KH however is a different matter I think behind the scene's EE is already on the up and if she does get her way and people say she always does I think alot of the teens in the show will be heading out the door.

LB's main problem was that she spend to much time on the bbc boards listening to what the tweenies wanted.

Not from where I'm standing. It's still one of the top conversation topics at schools.

Lol.. what? Trust me, there are much more pressing matters than EE to be discussed every day in school. Corrie and Home & Away are the only soaps anyone ever comments on at all in my school anyway..

My friends have started getting really pissed off with EE and stopped watching recently too... So when you say that EE is for the teens, you're wrong, because me and all my friends are 14/15 and hating it!

I think EE should stop aiming for younger teens. Like Tariq and the snake in the bathroom. Who was that for? Ten year olds?

Cater for 13/14+ and NO LOWER. We want adult issues... not the tweenies!
