Tablets

Please excuse my ignorance and I have googled this but has come up with so many different opinions I am so lost!

I wish to buy my mum a tablet for Xmas and I am wondering do you have to sync these tablets to get them working ie iPad/iPhone style or do they just start up and go?

Found a few on eBay I like the look of which run Android 2.2.

Also, if they do have to be synced do they sync ok with a MacBook pro?

Thanks in advance!

An Android tablet does not need to sync with anything to work. Your mum will need a google account setting up in order to access the market for apps/widgets/etc. There is a process when you first fire it up that goes through setting up the account. The google account isn't necessary to use the device, just to access the market.

No worries - out of curiosity which ones are you looking at?

The ePad seems to be one that keeps creeping up in my searches 7" with android 2.2 With flash 10.1.

She only needs it for surfing the net and ordering from her catalogues

I will warn you the cheap tablets don't often work will with market place (where you get extra applications).

On the cheap tablets you will find internet slow, even my £180 netbook leaves iPad 2 and transformer behind for web speed. I would suggest you try before you buy.

Finally have you decided which screen size you are going for, I have a 10" tablet and tbh, I could not switch to a 7" device now.

Well I own an iPad 2 and would get her one if I could afford it.

I'm thinking a 8" or 10" screen. she uses her iPhone very well so i thought this could be a nice little toy to replace her netbook which has become old now and very battered from her handbag travels!!

I've been reading other posts of processor speeds etc and one I found particularly interesting was the Archos 101, seems to be very well received.

Thanks

If you uses the iPhone and you can afford the ipad 2 then get that. As much as I hate apple, their products are easy to use and she is already used to the interface on the phone.

As of iOS5, the iPad and iPhone no longer require connection to a computer for initial activation. You don't actually need a computer at all now to use one, unless of course you have your own video/music files you want to sync onto them.
