Have you already downloaded iOS5?

If so, try cancelling the backup. Perform a standard sync & backup (& *make sure* it has backed up!), then Shift-Click on Update [or if you want to do a full Restore, Shift-Click on Restore]. This will then let you browse* to the firmware file (*.ipsw) and should bypass the horrendously slow backup.

*On Windows = "C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Software Updates\iPad<version>Restore.ipsw"

When I updated my iPhone I was offered the option to "Download and Update" or "Download Only". You want the second one.

i dont get that option. it just asks to update and then goes straight into backing up

If it's gone straight into backing up, then it must have already downloaded the update. Does iTunes show anything currently downloading? Can you cancel the backup?

You can get the iOS5 file directly from Apple - links are here: http://gizmodo.com/5849295/how-to-fi...ate-error-3200

Manual sync & backup.

Shift-Click Update or Restore then browse to the file.
