Dunno why I'd need to go there though as netflix already installed and logged into as a stand alone

(will go try now though.... just to see!)

I only did it as I wanted to see what would happen if tried to log into my account on the US site to add a device that's got Netflix using US server, but not UK server.

I gave up on my Apple TV.. the vouchers just seemed to be too complicated and I didn't know which ebay seller to trust etc...

However, I DID find out that by switching my Apple TV to US I can watch NHL highlights etc which is fab

Two of the things I most wanted to watch - Breaking Bad & Sympathy for Mr Vengeance - show up on browsing and are watchable on my computer, but are only accessible via search on Apple TV and when I actually try to play them on the latter device I get the message "Netflix is currently unavailable", whereas other shows and films work fine.

I'm guessing it's an unpublicised rights issue - if so, it would be nice if this was made clearer rather than a meaningless error message at the point of playing. I've contacted Netflix's UK Twitter support account about it but haven't heard anything back yet.”

Netflix support eventually got back to me with the unhelpful generic response of 'turn it off and turn it on again', which would have been relevant if I was having trouble accessing all content, not just a few isolated cases. I tried it anyway, but as expected it made no difference.

However, I have subsequently managed to find a way of playing these rogue items. My normal practice is to use the button in the middle of the four-way control on the Apple TV remote to select items on screen and drill-down through menu options, and I usually drill-down all the way to the programme description, which is when I was getting the error message. However, I have discovered that if I press the play/pause button when the programme icon is selected (i.e. the menu level above accessing its description), I am able to play the programme. Not sure yet what will happen I get to the end of the first episode of Breaking Bad, since I can't currently access the series list, but keeping my fingers crossed!

Surprised more people haven't encountered this problem - maybe I'm the only one contributing to this thread who isn't accessing US content on their Apple TV! - but hope this info will be of help to anyone who is.

“LONDON -- Specialty distrib Dogwoof is the latest company to partner with Netflix in Blighty.

The deal will see a raft of the distrib's docus, such as "Bobby Fischer Against the World," "Gasland," "Page One: Inside the New York Times," "Burma VJ," "Mugabe and the White African" and "The Age of Stupid," become available on the VOD service in the territory.

Netflix recently inked a deal with FremantleMedia Enterprises, which will bring 115 hours of content, such as shows like "Men Behaving Badly" and "The Naked Civil Servant" to the service.”

Also looks like Amazon are planning their own streaming-only service in the States at a lower-price point that Netflix. If that happens than Lovefilm could indeed be re-branded (Amazon-Instant?)

“Our UK and Ireland launch at the beginning of the month was very successful, and we’re seeing faster member growth than we did when we launched Canada. As our membership in the UK and Ireland grows, we’ll be able to invest more and more in content. We have a great selection of new films from Lionsgate and others, and will have on our service such highly-anticipated films as “Hunger Games” and “The Hobbit”, in addition to catalog movies from 5 of the 6 major studios. On the TV side, we have current Hollywood TV from the major networks and three key local channels.

In the UK and Ireland we launched with our best Facebook implementation to date. The positive social effects get stronger as the number of connected members rises, so we are working hard on making connecting very easy, and the connected experience very enjoyable.

Just as in the U.S. where our primary long-term competition will likely be TV Everywhere, in the UK our long-term competition will likely be Sky Go offering Sky Movies and Sky Atlantic on-demand. (Sky Atlantic is mostly HBO Originals content, and Sky Movies is one channel with the Pay 1 movie output from all six major U.S. movie studios).

We believe we will compete very effectively against Sky Go, given our advantages of being an unbundled low-priced offering with broad content that is purely on-demand, and personalized. Over the coming years, we hope to be able to grow large enough to outbid Sky for one or more major studio output deals, as we did this year for MGM.

Finally, in the UK, but not in Ireland, we also have the “free” BBC iPlayer and Amazon’s LOVEFiLM as competitors for viewing time. LOVEFiLM is primarily a DVD-by-mail service with 2 million DVD subscribers in the UK, Germany and the Nordics. iPlayer is an excellent over-the-top last few days catch-up service, free for UK residents.”

Thanks for the tip, watched Centurion last night and Toy Story 3. Always used my Xbox for UK content, last night used a Wii for US, quality was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Cheers.

I guess there's nothing wrong in the legal sense of using a VPN to watch US content? [/possiblesillyquestion]

Got an email last night to say my unblockus trial has ended.
Logging into US Netflix on my iPhone App is blocked and trying to access a webpage brings up a trial has ended please sign up to continue using unblockus DNS server, but strangely still able to connect through Wii still.
I wonder how long that will last. I don't mind paying, but may as well see how long I can go before I need to do so.

I confess I have had a thought a long the same lines, but all I have done is changed some settings on a game console.

I think any legal issues could be between the UK rights holder and the VOD supplier for making it so easy.

Yeah, same here. It's been running (free) on the WII for a couple of weeks now, even though I re-set internet settings!

It must be something to do with the way the WII is identified - I wonder if it will take a full factory re-set to get netflix back to UK!

Not that I'm complaining...

no, you just use automatic dns not manual and you'll be back to UK no problem

Just create a second wireless connection and leave the DNS alone and then that way you can switch between the two by choosing either connection 1 or 2.
On mine I've got connection 1 for UK Netflix and connection 2 for US Netflix. That way I've got the best of both worlds as they've both got stuff the other one hasn't.

ive cancelled my account

i just got fed up with the way they put new content on.

theres no "view by date uploaded" so everytime you want to see if anything new's been added you have to browse each genre.

Plus there isnt the content at the moment to justify paying £6 a month on top of the sky subscription

What you see all depends on what your rating preferences have been.

Yes, I've found myself using LoveFilm streaming more because of the superior navigation options. I even tried rating loads of the items on Netflix to give their algorithm something to work on, but I'm still not seeing a lot I actually want to view in their suggestions.

the suggestion/rating thing is nice but it shouldnt be the main way for them to show you whats available.

i know the argument is "oh when theres thousands of movies ill need it.

but what i need is a list to place all the ones i want to watch in the future and to be able to sort them by upload date.

the rating/suggestion thing looks like a way to find out what movies/tv i like so they can sell targeted adverts to me in the future or something.

because it doesnt really have any other function than to suggest movies you werent looking for in the first place.
