I've been saying for atleast 3 years that IPTV was the future, I was shot down with the same arguments about BB in the UK not being up to the job by the same people, now Sky will have some real competition from Netflix.

I agree Sky must be already worried as they are over advertising their Movie Service.

Broadband is still not up to the job in many places. i live in a small city and the majority of people here have a average of 6megabits as they are so far away from the exchange, with many people having a lot less.

We are suppose to have fibre in June, but i doubt that will happen when they say. i also think that more ISPs will get rid of the unlimited and go back to limits, they are not going to allow people all that data usage and get nothing out of it.

I doubt Sky is bothered about Netflix to be honest. sky should be more worried about people having less money and cutting down on their services, I know and have heard on forums about people who have cut down their Sky packages.

i can't see it either, but saying that Sky Hd like Freeview and Freesat HD is not that great anyway. i certainly would not pay a extra tenner a month for HD that is for sure.

Cheap high quality broadcasting compared to expensive low quality IPTV - oh yeah, real 'competition'

BB isn't up to the job, and assuming Netflix do launch a service, how long until they go bust like many other American imports?.

What other American online film providers have gone bust in the UK? Amazon-owned Love Film is going strong as is I-Tunes and 50%-US-owned Film Flex.

If you're referring to to 50% British, 50% US electrical retailer Best Buy. That company did not go bust, it withdrew from the UK market.

It is certainly part of the future. But iti is an inefficient use of resources for distributing popular programming. Far better to use a one to many distribution system with local caching.

For me, IPTV is a useful way of catching a programme I may have missed being broadcast and for the catching the first few or last few minutes of a programme that my local recording cut off for some reason (bad Auto Recording info or previous or following recordings finishing late oe starting early). No more than that even though I have a cheap, unlimited, fast enough broadband connection. That said, I do use it as the cheapest way of subscribing to Eurosport for the bike racing.

'Withdrew' leaving millions of pounds of debts - is that any different to 'gone bust'?.

They aren't the only American company to perform in a similar fashion either.

After having trialled Netflix all I can say is the selection of films is not that good. Certainly no better than lovefilm which isn't great.

Sorry to disagree but I've seen nothing to indicate this. And in the UK they are just part of Carphone Warehouse.

Best Buy UK are an equal joint venture between CPW and Best Buy USA.

I wouldn't say they left millions in debt, but the whole operation certainly lost millions and cost a fair few people their jobs.

Have CPW cleared all the debts then? - I was under the impression that they just folded Best Buy UK and Best Buy USA sodded off back to the States?.

This is the rather complicated structure:

CPW Group plc/Carphone Warehouse Group plc is now solely a holding company owning 50% of Best Buy Europe Distributions and 47% of Virgin Mobile France.

The other half of Best Buy Europe Distributions is owned by Best Buy USA.

Best Buy Europe Distributions comprises:
- The ten loss-making Best Buy UK shops which are being closed down.
- The 2,500 mobile phone stores branded as Carphone Warehouse in the UK and The Phone House in Europe
- The Geek Squad technical support service in the UK and Europe.

The losses that the ten Best Buy Europe shops made are offset against the profits that the other parts of Best Buy Europe made.

But that is only a trial and trials are normally just to see how well the service works, Since Netflix is going to do streaming only then will have to have a good range of content other wise it will fail before it starts.

No broadband is 100% and what about people who don't live next door to the exchange?

My broadband supplier is pretty good, but even they can't magic up more bandwidth.
If my broadband goes down, I could always tether. According to the speedtest app on my phone, I get 17mbps down, and 4.8mbps up over 4G.

That wouldn't last long with the data caps on mobile BB

Won't touch Netflix until they can offer me PQ what rivals that of the Sky Movies HD channels , my BB speed with Sky Unlimited is around 9mb what does Netflix in the states require to stream HD movies and what's the quality like ?
Here are some comparison shots someone posted over at avsforum:

Matrix Netflix - Matrix BluRay
Lost Netflix - Lost BluRay

Those were from just over a year ago. The HD netflix streams are 1080p and 5.1 surround. It scales to your network connection though, so the quality of the picture depends on your bandwidth.

According to Netflix, their highest quality streams are 4.8 Mbps for video and 384 kbps for the audio, making it 5.184 Mbps for the best quality stream.

Netflix also requires 40% headroom, so you need to sustain 7.3 Mbps to get the highest quality stream.

My cap is 2 gigs a month. That's more than enough to get me through an internet outage.

On Sky's Anytime+ OD service an HD movie can be between 3-5gb.

Yet, when i first started to use the broadband provider I use now, i had half a day without broadband due to a major network problem, strange thing was Bt had that problem the day before as well. but since then i have had no problems apart from my own hardware, must get a decent router.

but it could happen any time, the internet is full of servers that can go belly up, full of cables and networks,

Lucky you, 4g don't really exist in most of the country and when it does will it be able to keep to that speed?

Not the point anyway,
