I agree with you - if they really wanted people to mentor the contestants/pick songs/give constructive criticism etc they would hire experienced vocal coaches who could be on tap 24/7. I suspect the production team control most of what happens - after they are the ones whose jobs are really on the line if the program fails. Why should they leave even one single decision to a bunch of photogenic celebs for whom it is only one more opportunity to get richer and more famous?
